Kemper Profile Amp

Kemper Profile Amp

Meet my new guitar rig! I recently tested the Kemper Profile Amp, and I’m glad I did. Yemi Oyediran turned me on to the Kemper when I played the King Records Tribute at the Contemporary Arts Center in August. I liked the portability of the amp, and the sounds were cool, but it’s a complex unit to tweak, and I didn’t have time to get it fully dial in before the show. I almost passed on the amp, but this magic box allows you to profile of your exact guitar rig. I was intrigued, and I couldn’t help but give it a try.

Kemper Profile AmpYemi was kind enough to offer to profile my guitar rig at his studio, so I packed up my rig and began the journey into the land of profiling amps. I took my 1967 Fender Princeton Reve amp, with JHS Boost/Buffer, Fulltone Wah Pedal, Strymon OB 1, Strymon Sunset, POG, Eventide H9, TC Electronics Tripple Flashback Delay, and 63 Fender Strat. Yemi put a Neumann U87 and Avalon per amp, and we captured my clean, tan and brown sound– WOW! I was very impressed. I also purchased the Michael Britt’s complete profiles collection and was blown away! If you get this amp, these profiles are an absolute must– seriously!

Kelly Richey Guitar RigThe Kemper allows you to use eight effects and control everything with their controller. The controller has a nice built-in Looper however it does not sync with Ableton or other time sources (bummer!). I added my Pigtronix Infinity Looper and 4-foot controllers, Looptimus to trigger Ableton loops, and I’m set. The rig sounds amazing in the studio, and it’s coming close so far on stage. I’m trying to get the right speaker configuration AND still, keep my setup as simple as possible.

Kelly Richey Guitar RigI’ve finally resigned myself to the fact that there is NO perfect guitar rig and guitar gear is the best addiction a musician can hope for!

Stay tuned as I plan on shooting a video with full setup and tones for you to check out! I’ve included a few photos I captured in my studio…

Kelly Richey Guitar Rig 2017

Kelly Richey Guitar Rig 2017

Kelly Richey Guitar Rig 2017: Check out my new guitar rig!  This set up requires two separate pedal boards.  I have several reasons for splitting them up– a single pedal board is extremely heavy, and having the option to angle the board on the left when on stage makes it easier to access pedals quickly.

The board on the left is all I NEED for a gig with my band and the board to the right must be added to my solo shows because it have my Pigtronics Infinity Looper, Looptimus foot controller for Ableton Live, and my iConnect 4 channel audio interface / preamp for vocals, guitar, Ableton loops and beats.  My iConnect runs into my computer and out to my PA system for live sound amplification or to my studio recording set up.

Here’s a photo of my new studio setup.  I’m currently working on a new recording project– I’m excited and inspired.  Check out my setup below and stay tuned for a new video tutorial!

Take One-on-One Skype Guitar Lessons w/ Kelly Richey’s in her teaching studio from anywhere in the world!

Kelly Richey Studio Guitar RigGear Update:  I’ve added 5 new Strymon effects units.  Strymon effects are the sweetest effects on the market today.  Their sound quality is pristine and their deep rich tones are stunning!  As I expand into the world of ambient soundscapes– trip hop instrumentals, ambient space music, and trance blues, I have access every sound imaginable with a tap of my foot.  This collection of effects allows me to sound like I’m playing strings, synths, bass, clean and/or over driven guitar, and this just scratches the surface.

Strymon OB.1 CompressorMy first Strymon in the chain is the OB.1 Optical Compressor & Clean Boost:

Link with Description: OB.1 combines studio quality, beautifully transparent analog optical compression with a Clean Boost with EQ curves designed to super-charge your favorite amp and reveal its true character. Featuring an all-analog signal path with premium components throughout, a high-impedance input, and very low noise circuitry, OB.1 is perfect for the number one spot in your signal chain. It’s the missing piece you’ve been searching for.

Strymon SunsetIn addition to my Ibanez Tube Screamers I’ve added the Strymon Sunset Dual Overdrive:

Sunset Youtube Video #1

Sunset Youtube Video #2

Link with Description: Two pedals at once. Sunset is really two customizable overdrive pedals, independently selectable and flexibly routable, designed and voiced for complementary tones when stacked. Six distinct circuits each feel and react differently in your hands, two at once, all in one convenient package. Push your amp any way you want, from transparent “more amp” to heavy saturated fuzz, and all the best places in between.

Strymon MobiusThe next Strymon in the chain is the modulation machine called the Mobius Multidimensional Modulation:

Mobius Youtube Video

Link with Description:  Infinitely Organic. Some might say we’re driven. When our engineers lock themselves in our sound design labs for months on end, you might say we’re obsessed. We have been dedicating ourselves to forging a collection of the most organic, luscious, expressive, and versatile modulation effects ever heard.

It was an enormous mission—we painstakingly studied the nuances of the legendary modulations of celebrated tremolo effects, phaser pedals, chorus units, and more from the last five decades. We didn’t stop at faithfully capturing these warm and lush vintage sounds—we expanded their vocabulary with extended versatility and sonic possibilities never before heard.

My last two Strymons effects are the last effects in the chain .  I’ve added the Strymon Timeline Multidimensional Delay and the Strymon Big Sky.

Strymon TimelineStrymon Timeline Multidimensional Delay:  I’ve added the Timeline delay in conjuction with my TC Electronics Triple Flashback Delay. I use the Triple Flashback for standard 480 ms delay and ping pong delay and I use the Strymon Timeline for all other delay sounds– the list is too infinite to begin.  Be sure to check out the video so you can see what it does!

Timeline Youtube Video

Link with Description: Inspiration Machine.  When we decided to create a studio-class stereo delay effects pedal, we knew we must go well beyond what has been done in the past—in sound quality, sonic flexibility, hardware design, and processing power. We spent months locked up in the Strymon sound design labs dreaming up the most spacious, lush, creative, and tweakable delay effects ever heard. It was a monumental task—a relentless study of delays and their nuances, and a continuous pursuit of innovative and musically inspirational sounds. Utilizing a ridiculously powerful SHARC DSP, every drop of processing power is harnessed.

Strymon Big SkyLast in my chain the the Strymon Big Sky Reverb!  This reverb is absolutely amazing, it does it ALL!  Be sure to check out the video and experience it for yourself.

Big Sky Youtube Video

Link with Description:  Clear Skies Ahead.  Plug into BigSky and instantly lift your sound into the stratosphere. The world below you fades into the distance, and you’re elevated into a glow of lush, glorious, radiant reverbs.

To create a reverb experience as natural, beautiful, and immersive as BigSky required tremendous feats of sound engineering and artistic imagination. Using the fundamentals of acoustical science as our beacon, we carefully studied and scientifically analyzed reverb technology from the past fifty years. We faithfully captured the essence of these classic sounds, and forged ahead to dream up our vision of reverbs from the future.

TrueFire Presents Focus on Blues-Rock Power Trio

TrueFire Presents Focus on Blues-Rock Power Trio

TrueFire Presents Focus on Blues-Rock Power Trio: There’s nothing more exhilarating for a guitarist than taking center stage and fronting a power trio. Witness the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Clapton and so many other masters of this genre. It’s also a lot more challenging than it looks and that’s the premise for Kelly Richey’s Power Trio course, which focuses on the key elements, creative approaches and techniques that define the genre. Blues Rock Power Trio.

”We’re going to focus on the essential techniques and specific elements that are used when playing guitar in a blues-rock power trio. We’ll look at rhythm and lead guitar techniques and how they overlap, working together seamlessly to create a powerful wall of sound. I’ll also focus on the importance of creating musical ‘holes’, the power of creating space and how to work with a drummer and bass player to create a unique sound that best supports your guitar style.”

TrueFire Presents Focus on Blues-Rock Power Trio:  Kelly organized this course into four sections. In the first section, Kelly overviews the history of Blues-Rock Power Trios and some of the key players of the genre. Kelly also runs down the most common gear and tone considerations you’ll need to dial in to get that signature power trio blues-rock sound.

”We’ll look at how to design the right guitar rig to support your unique style. You’ll learn about guitar tone, effects, amplifiers and speaker configuration – all the things critical for you to have sustain, texture and articulation to support your signature power trio sound.”

In the second section, Kelly guides you through a series of essential rhythm techniques. She’ll show you the go-to chord voicings, a variety of ways to embellish your chords and some riff based approaches that weave rhythm and lead playing together.

In the third section, you’ll focus on soloing techniques. Kelly shares tips and tricks for animating your pentatonic scales with punctuation, articulation and dynamics. Kelly also demonstrates how to incorporate bends and vibrato to bring each note to life.

”We’ll work on approaches for playing lead guitar in a power trio setting. You’ll learn essential soloing techniques that reveal how to build a bridge between lead and rhythm guitar, leverage dynamics and create the musical ‘holes’ necessary to fully connect with a rhythm section.”

In the final section, you’ll apply everything that you learned in the previous sections as you play your way through four Performance Studies in a variety of keys and feels: Love, Whole Lotta Love, You Wanna Rock and Blues Rock Haze.

Kelly demonstrates all of the Performance Studies over rhythm tracks and then breaks them down by stepping you through the key concepts and techniques employed in the performance.

All of the key examples and Performance Studies are tabbed and notated for your practice, reference and study purposes. You’ll also get Guitar Pro files so that you can loop and/or slow any section down as you work through the lessons. Plus, Kelly generously includes all of the rhythm tracks for you to work with on your own.

So grab your guitar and let’s power up with Kelly Richey!
