Donna and Kelly Richey at the Niles Burn Run, July 9, 2016

Saturday, July 9 brought the band and me to Niles, Michigan for the 15th Annual Niles Burn Run festival. There I met my fan Michele and her friends Kari and Jennifer, who traveled all the way out from Greenville, MI – 137 miles away! – to see us play. Consider me humbled! I also snagged a photo with another fan, Donna – you can definitely tell I’d just come off the stage for that one. Rock’n’roll is sweaty work! It’s always a pleasure to meet fans like them. The band and I played well that afternoon and I was glad to have come out for this event.

RIGHT NOW

I’ve been back in the studio preparing material for my next album, which I feel will be a distinct shift from 2015’s SHAKEDOWN SOUL. This summer, thanks to my involvement with Women Writing for (a) Change, I’ve been writing more consistently than I ever have before in my life — all kinds of poetry and song lyrics and ideas that I’ve been recording in snippets on my iPhone as they strike me. I’ve got the time right now to get into the studio and start sorting through all of this raw material and see what kind of record comes out.

LAST WEEK

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE at the Redmoor – Cincinnati, OH

the kelly richey band live at the redmoor june 24 2016

I always love it when I get the chance to play a venue in Cincinnati, where I have lived for the last twenty years, making it something of a second hometown. The Redmoor is a unique theatre-style venue in the neighborhood of Mt. Lookout with an intimate, walk-right-up-to-the-stage environment , making it a joy to play. From the stage I could see lots of familiar faces and friends in the audience. It was also great to play alongside Rikk Manning (bass) and Tobe Donahue (drums) – they are my dream rhythm section.

Kelly Richey solo at Third Street Cigar – Waterville, OH

John Henry is the owner of the Third Street Cigar Bar in Waterville, outside Toledo, and he has a real knack for hand-selecting some of the best bands to play his venue. He is a real music lover and a supporter of the blues, and it was an honor to work together with him to make this solo show happen. There was a great mix of people in the crowd – and it was a crowd who was really there to hear the music, not just have me on in the background while they ate and drank. You never know who you’re gonna get with some of these smaller bar gigs…

Want to book Kelly Richey solo or with the band? Get in touch.

NEXT MONTH

The band and I are excited to announce these July shows:

  • July 9 – Niles, Michigan – The 15th Annual Niles Burn Run, a 3-day festival including a car show, motorcycle show, plenty of vendors and food, a benefit bike ride, and more. More info

The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem – White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival

The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem
White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival

Check out this new video footage of The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem – from the White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival on August 14th, 2016.  I’d like to give a BIG shout out to John Berkey on the drums as he so mightily filled in for Tobe Donohue while his daughter was being born!  Rikk Manning KILLS it on his bass guitar solo — watch out!

This video was shot and edited by Moe Joe Vision — thank you for sharing this footage with us!

Enjoy!

Short Bio: Kelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there; to date logging an extraordinary 1,000,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 30-year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey has toured in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Born in Lexington, Kentucky but now based in Cincinnati, Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, a staggering 4,000 gigs later, she more than earns the title of master guitarist and singer/songwriter. She has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Robben Ford, Warren Zevon, and James Brown.  Richey has fronted her blues/rock power trio, The Kelly Richey Band since the early 1990’s, and she also performs an intense, dazzling solo show incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, looping, beats, electronic sound synthesis, and some of her more personal acoustic material.

Richey has been teaching guitar almost as long as she’s been playing; with over three decades of teaching experience under her belt, she is a deeply dedicated and inspirational guitar instructor who has taught well over 1,000 students to date.  Richey teaches both privately and through the online teaching course with TrueFire.  Richey has put out a number of instructional videos and teaches several guitar workshops around the country.  Richey has a rock solid understanding of blues guitar techniques, which she passionately passes on to her students. She’s a warm, outgoing and dynamic guitar instructor with a unique teaching style who relates exceptionally well to her students no matter what their skill level or background may be. Her goal is to provide expert instruction tailored to meet each student’s individual needs, so that he or she can excel to full potential.

Kelly Richey_banner_14_headshotDuring a holiday break in late 2008, Richey just happened to watch the movie “You Can Heal Your Life”, which is a film about the life and teachings of healer Louise Hay; and thus began Richey’s journey— first, taking charge and changing her own life in many positive ways, and secondly, deciding to take the steep, three-year learning curve to become a Life Coach herself. Richey’s mission is to create a sacred space for people to heal themselves and to provide inspiration to those who seek a deeper meaning in their lives. As a Certified Dream Coach, Dream Coach Group Leader and True Purpose Coach™, Richey takes clients through a process to help identify and remove obstacles that hold people back from doing what they truly love. In her own words Richey says, “This process will enable you to identify what you were most designed to do, and who you were most designed to be in this life”.  Richey teaches her clients a process to develop effective tools that deal directly with one’s fears and break free from the self-limiting constraints of one’s past.

The Kelly Richey Band at Thunder Bay Blues Festival

The Kelly Richey Band at Thunder Bay Blues Festival

We had a blast this past weekend at the Thunder Bay Blues Festival!  The Thunder Bay Blues Festival staff were super nice– we’d like to give a shout out to say THANK YOU– we really enjoyed ourselves!  The weather was perfect and the crowd was amazing… the festival was located on the Northern shore of Lake Superior — wow — what a view!

Everything was great until the drive home… the water pump went out in the van and we were stranded just outside Duluth, MN.  A wonderful family (Linda and Mike Rosin) who lived across from where we broke down were kind enough to give Rikk and Tobe a ride to the Duluth airport to rent a car so they could get home to their families– and Sonya and I stayed behind while the van was serviced.  Thank you Mike and Linda! Your kindness and helpfulness were very much appreciated, and we will be sure to “pay it forward”!

The van broke down on Sunday — it’s Tuesday and we’re still stranded, however, the van is scheduled to be finished by this evening and we should (fingers crossed) be on our way back to Cincinnati by tonight.

Thank you to all who came out to see us play in Canada.  We look forward to coming back–  see you down the road!

The Kelly Richey Band Photos with Heart and Boston

This has been a very BUSY past few weeks!!!  The Kelly Richey Band kicked things off by playing “The Bash” in Middletown, OH on Wednesday of last week.  On Friday, I entered a week long retreat with WWf(a)C and slipped out for a 24 hour period to join the band to open for Heart in PA and once the retreat ended yesterday, Thurdays at noon, I headed straight to Kettering, OH to the Fraze Pavilion to open for Boston last night.  Today we get back in the van and head to Thunder Bay, Ontario for one of Canada’s largest blues festivals where we play tomorrow night!

Here are some photo highlights from the Heart and Boston Concerts– I will write and reflect on our journey’s when I return!

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE – WE WILL ROCK YOU!

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE – WE WILL ROCK YOU!

This past weekend the Kelly Richey Band hit the road for two festivals– unfortunately, the festival in Indiana was rained out, but the festival in Alpena, Michigan was alive and well. The weather was a little cooler than we expected, but once we started playing we warmed up quickly! The crowd was great, and we really appreciate all those who came out to see us! Check out the photos for KRB in action: Rikk Manning on bass guitar, and Tobe Donohue on drums (and DJ scratching) are two of the best matches for my guitar work to hit the stage yet! I’m thrilled to be playing with these two masterful musicians– we have a great time off stage as well as on, and I couldn’t be happier! Check out the photos below: (Photos by Sonya Ziegler)

Kelly Richey News & Updates

Kelly Richey News & Updates

My only day off was spent in The Villages where a dear friend was kind enough to let us stay a few days in her summer home.  The Villages is a large community of (mostly) golfers, with great restaurants AND a Starbucks just one mile for the house.  Thank you John and Mary, I really appreciate your kindness and generosity!

On Saturday, we drove a few hours on back roads to a little town named Palatka where the Blue Crab Festival that I’ve played on several occasions is held.  Unfortunately a favorite spot of mine, Billy’s Downtown Blues, recently closed, but the locals who support music are still alive and well in supporting Billy and his wife Gaye to hold backyard ”house parties”.  Billy and Gaye’s home has a large backyard that had a stage and lights and plenty of seating.  I played to packed house– it was a mini rock concert and oh, so much fun!  Thank you Billy and Gaye for hosting this event, it was a blast!

On Sunday, we headed to Bradenton (near Sarasota) for a guitar instruction workshop and evening performance at Ace’s where I’ve played for a number of years.  My longtime friends who recently moved to this area from Michigan live just two miles from Ace’s.  After guitar lessons, and a live performance to a warm and welcoming crowd we grabbed our last nights sleep before heading home. Chista and Hugh are known for their hospitality and we awoke to fresh blueberries, mangos, chocolate croissants AND a cooler packed with healthy food for the long drive home!  Also, Christa and Hugh were kind enough to take Sonya on a mini-tour of the area so that she could take some photos.  Thank you Hugh and Christa, your hospitality was wonderful— and it was so nice to catch up with you!

Once on the road, we stopped at RVR Horse Rescue to visit one of my dearest, lifelong friends, Kitrina Kelly and see the amazing work being done to save animals that have been abandoned, abused, or no longer wanted. It was hot, but well worth the heat and bright sun to tour the rescue.  RVR Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization and is run strictly by volunteers.  It truly is an amazing place staffed with wonderful, loving, selfless women who give 100% to the animals they rescue.  RVR Horse Rescue has a fan page on Facebook which is updated regularly and has some wonderful stories of the horses they have rescued.  Please Facebook “Like” them— they would truly appreciate it! Sonya got some amazing photos— check these out: http://www.sonyaziegler.com

Back home to Cincinnati this week for two solid days of teaching and a recording session with the amazing Cheryl Renee before hitting the road again for more festivals and opening for Heart with the band! This will be a GREAT show, and we are very, very excited and honored to be opening for one of my all-time favorite bands!

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS HARD!!!

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS HARD!!! – “Summer of LOVE” Tour 2015

Kelly Richey and her band returned to the stage kicking off their 2015 Summer Festival Season!  Never before has such power come from the stage with new material, a new album (almost completed) and, most importantly, raw energy that FAR surpasses any previous KRB shows.  Bassist Rikk Manning and Kelly Richey go toe-to-toe with riffs that send sonic waves through the stratosphere, and Tobe Donohue not only kills it on drums, but he scratches and adds his masterful electronic skills as one of today’s leading DJ’s with fresh, new sounds that take KRB to a new level of performance that blends jambase, rock-n-roll, blues, and a heavy dose of funk and hip-hop.  The band sounds GREAT, the audience is going wild, and we are killing it at every show we play.  Look out everyone, the KRB is headed your way and we intend to blow the roof off at every show we play!

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS It Hard

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS It Hard

The Kelly Richey Band returns to the stage in full force with a new line-up AND a new sound! Rikk Manning absolutely rips apart the bass guitar and Tobe Donohue lays it down on drums– and adds a new sonic dimension as he scratches and delivers beats that bring the audience to their feet with their heads banging and their boots stomping! Richey scorches her Strat’s fretboard hotter than ever before with new songs from her soon-to-be-released new CD, along with crowd pleasers like “Risin’ Sun”, “Feelin’ Under” and “Leavin’ It All Behind”.

Be sure to check out KRB’s Summer of LOVE Tour Schedule and come enjoy a new and exciting journey to the depths of BLUES and GROOVES! And Sonya Ziegler is back in action with her camera capturing the magic as it happens! Stay tuned for more tunes, news, and photos!

Here is the Kelly Richey Band lineup for 2016!  Back by popular demand featuring Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue on drums, and Rikk Manning on bass guitar.  WOW!  I had more fun and positive fan responses in 2015 than in any other year in regard to my rhythm section.  I can’t wait to hit the stage with these guys again in 2016.  We’ll be dishing out a new FRESH set of material (with some older KRB favorites here and there) with a killer new sound from my new CD release, “Shakedown Soul” that is totally ROCKIN’…!  I’m so excited to be sharing the stage with these uber talented and genuinely nice guys.  We are definitely going have a blast, and we can’t wait to rock the house for our fans!
