Kelly Richey Blues-Rock Power Trio

The Kelly Richey Blues-Rock Power Trio brings its hard-hitting, gritty brand of electric blues to The Greenwich in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 18 at 8pm. Richey is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and songwriter, who bluesman Lonnie Mack once described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body, with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.”

Kelly Richey Band Plays Franke Center

Kelly Richey Band Plays Franke Center in Marshall MI – Part 1

On Saturday, October 22nd, The Kelly Richey Band stepped on stage at the Franke Center, in Marshall MI,  for what would be a magical night of music!  The shows was part of the Eaton Blues Series– the venue was beautiful, the crew was fantastic, and the crowd was ready to hear some music! I was joined by Rikk Manning and Lonnie Buckley, and the result was one of pure magic! This truly was an amazing evening and the experience we shared that night on stage and with the audience, was one that I will cherish for years to come.

With over 4,000 shows under my belt, it’s shows like this that keep me inspired and loving what I do. Fortunately we had a video camera and were able to capture the entire show! I completed the edits for the first of two hours worth of music last night and posted it to my youtube channel late last night. I’m scheduled to complete edits for part 2 by first of the week– I’ll post the footage ASAP!

So, if you wanna rock– sit back, relax, grab your beverage of choice, and relive this musical journey with us…

I’d like to thank the Eaton Blues Society for having us play this year and I’d like to thank everyone who showed up and helped to create a magical evening!

On Friday, May 20, the Kelly Richey Band played at esteemed blues bar Stevie Ray’s in Louisville, KY. Thanks to everyone who came out for this great show! It’d been over a year since I last played Stevie Ray’s and it was my pleasure and privilege to return to this venue — one of the oldest blues bars in town. Special thanks to fan David Evans for capturing the above photo, and as always, to my bandmates Tobe Donahue and Rikk Mullins.

Rockin’ The House

Rockin’ The House

This past Saturday, I was honored to play a house concert at the beautiful home of Jay and Cheri Brandt.  Their home is in the country, near Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.  It’s so rural, in fact, there’s no cell signal the last mile of the drive.  The house was packed with new friends and loyal fans.  One of my dear friends, Cliff York (of York Vision in Cincinnati) introduced me to the Brandt’s earlier this year (Sonya and I thank you for the awesome home cooked vegan meal!) and we set the date.

The house concert scene is a growing phenomena throughout the USA, Canada, and Europe.  I was recently accepted into “Concerts In Your Home” an online community that pairs musicians and people interested in hosted house concerts.  CIYH has a heavy vetting process for musicians with very strict criteria.  Many people have asked me, “What’s a house concert?”  Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like… it’s a concert in your own home!

Kelly Richey House Concert

Now, anyone can throw a party and ask a musician to come play music, but this is much more that that.  This is an “event”.  An event where an artist sets the stage, people come to hear music, and the audience is there to listen!  People bring food and beverages, and typically there’s an hour before the show to meet and greet everyone, eat some food– and once everyone is settled in their seats, the music begins.  This allows an artist to have a fully captive audience, perform in an intimate setting, play music, tell personal stories, and when the music is over, the party continues!

Saturday night the house was packed full of interesting people who love music and I performed my electric solo show.  People were dancing– and all but swinging from the rafters by the second set!  Many people have questioned if my show is appropriate for someone’s home– yes it is!  LOL!  I use my full guitar rig AKA “spaceship” and two small amps.  I play according to the size of the room and to the mood of the room.  I play an acoustic set in the middle and can lean more towards acoustic the entire set if needed.

Kelly Richey House Concert

Most artists that play the House Concert market are all acoustic, and I can certainly do that; but I have the added advantage of offering both acoustic and electric performances.  And I have more funny/interesting stories than I could ever begin to tell; and I have more music to offer than I could ever begin to cycle through.  For me– short of playing a big festival, this is the absolute best modality an artist could ask for.  It’s an amazing feeling to step onto a big stage in front of thousands of people– there’s nothing like it!  I’ve had my share of wonderful performances while playing in clubs and music venues, but throughout the years there’s been a sense of separation.  I’m a people person, and with the amount of touring that I’ve done, I’ve seldom had the opportunity to get to know many of my fans.  This has always felt a bit empty.  We drive like crazy to get to the venue, hit the hotel, run to the club for soundcheck, eat what dinner we could find, hit the stage, head to the merchandise table, and back to the hotel.  Not that I don’t love my job, but house concerts offer so much more in terms of really engaging with my audience.

Kelly Richey House Concert

I’m excited and inspired to create a solo performance that allows me to stretch my wings as an artist and come in for a landing to meet my band on the other side.

If this sounds like something you’d be interested in doing, please feel free to email me and we’ll discuss the possibility of me coming to your home for a house concert.  Here’s a video put together by the “Concerts In Your Home” community.  The video explains the concept thoroughly.

New Kelly Richey Video Fading (acoustic)

New Kelly Richey Video Fading (acoustic)

I just uploaded the new promotional video for “Fading (acoustic)” to YouTube! Please share!

Fadin’ – written by Kelly Richey

There’s a way in – aint no way out
To this thing that we keep talking’ about
I heard you callin’ – and I watched you fallin’
But I never could get through to you

On down the road where – everything lies there
Dream your dreams and watch them fly away
I’m sure there’s sometimes – but maybe no time
To find a reason left to live at all

You’re fadin’ – fadin’ away
You’re just another face in this crowd
with nothing to say

Through your eyes you – see what you want to
Then laugh at me because I’m just a joke
You’re so lonely – loving’ means only
What you do when there’s not time to cry

You came to me when – you were free then
I turned around – to watch – you fly away
I see you running – the sun keeps coming
Down on you – but not to light your way

You’re fadin’ – fadin’ away
You’re just another face in this crowd
with nothing to say

Fading appears on the latest Kelly Richey CD titled “Shakedown Soul”.

Guitar and Writing Workshops in the Schools

Guitar and Writing Workshops in the Schools with Kelly Richey

I spent the day at Batesville Middle School yesterday and had a great time working with the students! I did three guitar instruction workshops for the music department, four writing classes for the language arts department, and a live solo performance after school for the community!

I gave Leon Lenneking, head of the music department, access to my “Blues On Steroids Guitar Instruction Video Series” six weeks before the program and was thrilled to see that the 6th grade students were all playing “Ramblin’ On My Mind”, a 12-bar blues song included in the series.  It was so much fun having three classes jamming to the blues with me!

In the writing classes I shared my poetry book and we discussed the importance of writing as a form of self expression.  I did several “fast-writes” that invited students to write about a success and a challenge they’ve faced.  We covered topics around “bullying” and healthy forms of expressing feelings.  I shared with them my struggles around reading and dyslexia, explained to students the importance of asking for help when they need it, and that they can do overcome almost anything with the proper support.

After seven class periods and a quick dinner, I put on an electric solo performance for the community.  It was a very warm turn out on a very cold night!

I’d like to thank the Rural Arts Alliance for sponsoring this program, and a very special thanks to two very amazing teachers– Leon Lenneking and Lisa Barnett, for orchestrating the days events!

News & Updates

News & Updates: Kelly Richey Solo & The Kelly Richey Band

I just returned from a two-week tour that took me through Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia.  The tour kicked off with solo shows just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, and then on down into Pensacola Beach, Florida.  After that, I taped the TrueFire shoot at the TrueFire studio in St. Petersburg for my next guitar instruction video “Focus On: Power Trio”, and on the way home we met the band for shows in the greater Knoxville area just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.

On the way to my third show in Bradenton, Florida, my “old faithful” Dodge Sprinter tour van decided to take a broken-down permanent rest 95 miles from our destination. Transmission went out suddenly with no warning. Thankfully with Triple A Plus you get 100 miles of free towing—  and that’s exactly how I arrived in Sarasota, Florida for my show the following night at Ace’s Music venue!  We want to personally thank our dear friends Hugh and Christa Graham for their kindness and generosity in helping us logistically transfer gear, feed us, and put us up in their home while all this madness was going on… thank you so much!

While in St. Petersberg, Florida for the TrueFire shoot, I was purchased a new Dodge ProMaster City to use for solo shows while the “beast” is currently being repaired for the band shows during festival season.  I’ll have to fly back to sunny Florida to get the van, but with 8 degree weather here in Cincinnati, I’m not too worried about working that mission into my schedule ;>)

Here’s a list of what’s upcoming shows and appearances by Kelly Richey:

Thursday, January 21st, 2016:

Shakedown Soul CD Release:

“Shakedown Soul” is Kelly Richey’s 16th album in her 35 year career as a Master guitar slinger. The album is an unprecedented mix of urban/indie in-your-face, raucous rock n roll, blues, funky bass grooves, and synthesized electronica— complete with DJ scratching and drum loops; with added elements like horns, strings, and synth sequencing that combine to make “Shakedown Soul” a one-of-kind, phenomenal sonic wall of sound that will have you foot stomping and head banging one minute and completely mesmerized the next. Richey’s husky alto vocals and raw, ultra personal songwriting will leave you introspective, speechless and wanting more. Her guitar work on this album is truly exceptional— the songs retain her signature Strat sound, but Richey steps out of the box to incorporate new melodies and synthesized guitar sounds that sit perfectly within the concept of the album.

“Shakedown Soul” is a studio album superbly mixed and mastered by producer, Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue and features a group of extraordinary musicians and back scene talent all collaborating to make the finest piece of work that Richey has done to date. All the songs are original, and feature Richey on guitar and vocals, Rikk Manning on bass, and Tobe Donohoe on drums, scratching and synths. In “You Wanna Rock” and “Love” you can hear some of Richey’s early influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Free, and Bad Company. The song “Lies” is influenced by Sheryl Crow’s self titled album, and the tracks “Afraid To Die” and “The Artist In Me” are haunting tunes that reflect the influence producer Daniel Lanois and artist Emmy Lou Harris’s “Wrecking Ball” album had on her. Add to that list “Just like A River” and you have three songs taken from Richey’s poetry and reflect her influence for artist Patti Smith— while musically being influenced from bands like the Smithereens and early Chrissy Hinds of the Pretenders. “I Want To Run” draws on straight forward power chords and powerful riffs that pull from influences like Lenny Kravitz. “Only Going Up” and “I Want To Run” is where you’ll find a classic example of where rock and roll and electronica meet face to face! Richey approached the writing and recording from a strip-downed perspective, writing the majority of this material to both rock and hip-hop drum loops. Heavily influenced by the work of early Black Keys, Jack White and Led Zeppelin, Richey handed her songs to Tobe to “do his thing”. Richey said to Tobe and Rikk, “You make me cool and you make me relevant and I’ll make you rock!” Indeed she did! Tobe brings his unique bend of heavy funk, electronica, D.J. production to each song, and Rikk manning completes the groove with his spectacular bass playing.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Richey has crafted her finest album to date, featuring ten stellar songs that are guaranteed to blow you away whether you are an old fan or new. Be prepared for an astonishing, intense sonic experience that will leave you with your jaw on the ground!

Kelly Richey Solo Blues Experience

Kelly Richey Solo Blues Experience
Third Street Cigar: December 18th, 2015
“Shakedown Soul” CD Release

John Henry owns a high end cigar bar in a suburb of Toledo, Ohio.  John knows his stuff and loves the blues.  He has put on over 1,000 blues shows, to date.  His wife Connie is warm and welcoming and an excellent cook and the Henry’s have the musicians over for dinner before each show.

It’s clubs like this and people who care so deeply that make my job mean even more.  I’d like to give a very special shout to all the regulars at Third Street who are there each time I play, and especially to John and Connie!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Kelly Richey Solo Blues Experience - Photos by Sonya Ziegler

Kelly Richey Solo Blues Experience - Photos by Sonya ZieglerI have a number of Kelly Richey Band fans ask about my solo show. To my surprise I almost always find that they assume my solo show consists of me just playing acoustic guitar; essentially, that my solo performances must be laid back and “unplugged” shows.

Although, I do perform more intimate acoustic solo shows in venues, writing circles, and upon request at house parties where quieter energy is more appropriate, my typical solo show is an electrified, high energy, melt-your-face Kelly Richey blues experience! If you’ve never been to one of my solo shows, please check out these photos of my guitar looping set up, Native Instruments Maschine Studio set up (where I generate my beats and grooves), my pair of Fender Princeton Reverb amps, and my beloved 65′ vintage Strat!

Back In The Saddle AGAIN…!

Back In The Saddle AGAIN…!

Rikk Manning, Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue, and Kelly Richey are back in the saddle again with the release of Kelly Richey’s brand new album “Shakedown Soul”. This Saturday night kicks off the first of six CD release parties for the KRB fan base until festival season begins!

KELLY RICHEY BAND:
12/19/15 – Kelly Richey Band – 8pm
Dayton, OH    – Oddbody’s Music Room

Tonight the band was rehearsing in Kelly’s studio— working out the kinks and getting the new songs ready for the live show, which is sure to be ROCKIN! Be sure to check out the story behind the making of “Shakedown Soul”…

If You Wanna Rock – We’re Gonna Roll!
Kelly Richey’s “SHAKEDOWN SOUL”

“Shakedown Soul” has been a journey filled with profound personal growth, just as all of my prior sixteen CD’s have been. Let me tell you the story:

I went to Duane Lundy at Shangri-La Productions in December 2014 with 5 songs that I’d written to drum loops. I wanted to cut them live with drummer Robby Cozensa, Robby is a brilliant drummer and we approached the sessions like the White Stripes and The Black Keys— raw, real and organic. We added bass and keys, mixed, and did a basic mastering process. I also recorded two music videos, “Love” and “Afraid To Die” for release in February and March of 2015 and started booking and playing shows.

During my continued writing for “Shakedown Soul”, I had begun putting together a solo show and hired Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue to help me design my “spaceship” with loops, beats and new exciting elements that were cool and fun to work with. I was having a blast! While working with Tobe one day I asked him to play a set of drums set up in his studio— Woah!!! I was taken aback! He sounded like John Bonham and the loops he gave me that day sounded like a blend of blues, rock, funk and hip-hop— just what I’d dreamed of playing to in a solo setting.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerCurious, I asked Tobe if he would consider playing festivals only with me, (if I could find a bass player that made him want to play!) He said he would consider it, but stressed that he too wanted to do something that was fun, creative and inspiring. I went on a search and after several weeks of looking I found Rikk Manning. Tobe, Rikk and myself met up in my studio with the new songs and songs from my most recent live CD, started playing and, WOW magic began to happen! During the course of 2015, I played over 25 festivals and concerts with my new rhythm section and I’ve honestly never known such musical or professional happiness! I had long-time Kelly Richey Band fans saying, “This is the best I’ve every heard you sound”, and, “I’ve never seen you having so much fun AND where on earth did you find these awesome guys!!!???”

All the while, I kept song writing and I wrote some of the strongest material I’ve written to date….songs that access the deepest parts of my soul. The writing process was interwoven with my training to become a facilitator for Women Writing for (a) Change (WWF(a)C) where I had three week long workshop intensives this summer to write and develop. That has been a very rewarding experience and one that I will treasure forever.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerIn early October of this year I attended a writing workshop with Mary Gauthier, one of my absolute favorite songwriters of all time, and there I wrote the last song for the new CD. I called it, “I Want To Run”— a deeply personal and prophetic song that captured many of the struggles I faced and have continued to face as an artist and a human being. I give song writing credit to Mary as her advice throughout the workshop helped me to see the song that needed to be written. She helped me find the truth I was afraid to write about and ultimately afraid to face. Songwriting credits on “Shakedown Soul” are also given to Sonya Ziegler because she has been my musical sounding board for over five years now— she was very much involved in the development of my solo show, my acoustic CD “Finding My Way Back Home”, my poetry book “Whisperings – A Collection Of Poems By Blues Guitarist Kelly Richey”, my last studio CD release “Sweet Spirit”, and now “Shakedown Soul”.

The angst, joy, new growth in learning to accept myself, facing some hard truths and fears, and personal development process I’ve been through this past year has been just that, a “shakedown” of my very soul.

This past October I celebrated being sober now for 6 years but it’s just recently that I’ve started into a 12-step recovery process because I find that as a person with an addictive personality, being an “a-holic” continues in the form of negative patterns and ways of behaving until really being dealt with. For me, I’m a workaholic and the struggle with self worth is non-ending. There is no amount of success that can heal such wounds, so I’m happy to share that this year has presented many things to be thankful for— sobriety for 6 years, an amazing collection of friends that support and love me, Sonya Ziegler whom has stood by my side through the difficulties that a busy career and personal struggles presented, my mom and dad for loving me unconditionally, and you— each and every one of you who’s taking the time to read these words.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerAfter touring with my band this summer and sharing so much magic on stage, I knew that I wanted Tobe to produce the CD— and I asked for he and Rikk to play on the tracks. During the recording process we didn’t even see each other, as we all have our own personal recording studios, we all trusted each other musically. I asked Tobe to bring in elements of his production skills like “scratching”, DJ work, and his hip-hop and funk background from years of production work with Bootsy Collins, and I said “Dude, make me cool!” And he did… coupled with Rikk Manning’s stunning bass work throughout these tracks; laying down the best and deepest bass grooves I’ve EVER heard in my life! WOW— I’m thrilled! Sonya Ziegler did the amazing artwork and photography for the CD, and designer Gary Kelley put it all together. Their team work to bring Sonya’s artistic master to print is the icing on the cake. Me, I just play guitar and sing! LOL!

I’m proud to introduce to you “Shakedown Soul”— and I’m releasing this to my fan base first, before taking the CD to national press and radio. With your order, you’ll get an immediate FREE download of ”Shakedown Soul” to listen to while you wait for the hardcopy of the CD’s arrival on your doorstep.

I Thank you in advance for giving me a place to land in this crazy and wonderful musical landscape. I can’t wait for you to hear “Shakedown Soul”!

Blues In The Schools Programs, Workshops and Live Performance – Part 2

I returned home late Sunday night after a two-week solo tour in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.  3,000 miles, 12 high schools, 2 middle schools, 2 universities (where I held 7 individual class lectures), 9 assembly programs, 3 guitar instruction workshops, 2 theater performances, 1 fundraiser for Music for Change to help support these types of educational programs for the public, 1 live radio show appearance, a live TV interview with performance footage, and a club date in IA on my way home.

Having an opportunity to share my story with young people was a powerful experience.  I talked to them about what it takes to be an artist, as well as what it was like being a student with learning disabilities, graduating high school with a 4th grade reading level, and embracing and overcoming those challenges in order to succeed and follow my dreams.  I learned a lot from being in a series of new school districts, meeting hard working teachers who are deeply committed to their jobs.

Here’s an excerpt of the response I received from one of the students I met along the way:

I really enjoyed your performance for us. I’m involved in our school’s drumline and two of the business clubs offered at my school. I play percussion in the school band, and play drum set in my free time. I’m also an avid songwriter so when you were telling your stories I was able to relate to a lot of them. That was the best performance I’ve seen at Central since I started attending high school in the fall of 2012. I’ve been participating in music classes since fifth grade when I started with flute because they wouldn’t allow me to play percussion all because I was a girl. When I got into middle school, I signed up to play percussion and found my niche. I am the first child in my family to be in band, and my eighth grade brother is following in my footsteps. When we were younger, I taught him a lot of drumming techniques and he tried to teach me guitar, but instead we held little concerts for our family that we called our “Jam Sessions”. I have written approximately forty or fifty songs since fifth grade, and now I’m slowly starting to write the music to go with my lyrics. You really captured my attention and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and love of music with me and all of my peers. The world can use more music lovers, and less violence.

Thank you again for a fantastic performance and a mind-blowing experience!

I also had another student share his passion for writing with me and even sent me a poem that he allowed me to post on my blog “The Valley of Death” By Garrett Thoreson.

Kelly Richey and Music for Change - M4C

I’d like to share my gratitude for the efforts of one person who made this amazing trip possible. A gentleman by the name of Steve Matzke drives a truck and manages stage crews in the ND and MN area for a large number of live music events in his area.  I first met Steve when I played the Fargo Blues Fest in mid- 2004, and he was responsible for opening the door for me to play the Empire Arts Theater in Grand Forks and a number of other dates in the area.  The amount of work that went into pulling this off is mind-blowing.  I watched as he took a dream and turned it into a reality, and I’m not only inspired, I’m impressed and deeply moved.

Steve had a dream to bring artists into schools to support music awareness, blues history, and the empowerment of young people learning through music and the arts.  He raised the funding from individual donations, small business contributions, and the University of Minnesota-Crookston.   Steve doesn’t do email and he doesn’t have an office, meaning he got in his car and went from school to school, talking to principals, teachers, professors, donors, and friends, to pull this off.  I’m honored to have been the artist asked to perform, and as a result, I’m inspired to continue this work.

Kelly Richey – Home Sweet Home!!!

Kelly Richey – Home Sweet Home!!!

I got in late last night after a 13-hour drive home from Byron’s in Pomeroy, IA.  Byron’s is a priceless venue — it’s one of the priceless venues still cherished by a touring artist.  The crowds are always kind and their mission is to support live music! It’s REFRESHING to the soul!

Byron “gets it” and so do his patrons — you feel the vibe when you walk in the door.  Byron’s seats about 60 people and serves popcorn and frozen pizza. The wait staff does a great job, everyone is friendly, and when the music starts, people shut up and listen!

Here’s what I know about Pomeroy, IA:  I’ve never seen a street light; Main Street in one block long; if the club is closed when you get to town, there’s no cell signal to call someone to let you in; and if you stand in front of the club and yell “BYRON” a few times, pretty soon you’ll see a Toyota Prius pull up with a Dead-head-hippie-type in pastel tie-dye overalls emerge to give you a bear hug — that alone is worth the drive!

Roger D. Feldhans is the local photographer and almost never misses a show.  At the end of every show I’m always handed a freshly printed 5 x 7 photo of me performing as a souvenir.  I don’t think I’ve ever left Byron’s empty handed OR without a smile on my face.

If you’re ever in IA, add this to your bucket list!  Here are a few pictures from the show, I hope you enjoy!
