The Kelly Richey Blues-Rock Power Trio brings its hard-hitting, gritty brand of electric blues to The Greenwich in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 18 at 8pm. The Making of the ‘Purple Reigns’ Prince Tribute

Bootsy Collins

Over Memorial Day weekend 2016, I had the great honor of playing in a tribute show to one of my favorite artists, Prince. The show, called “Purple Reigns,” was sponsored by the Bootsy Collins Foundation and emceed by Bootsy himself, along with his wife, Pepperminte Patti.

Together with Jess Lamb (of American Idol fame), Mike Cobb, Keith Cheatham, Candice GI CanDo Cheatham, Zackary Adams, Ron Avant, Alissia Benveniste, and longtime Prince bandmembers John Blackwell and MonoNeon — we brought over 300 people to Bogart’s in Cincinnati, where Prince played a surprise show just a few years ago. Parts of the proceeds went to the Bootsy Collins Foundation, which also collected donations of musical instruments on the night of the performance.

I spent a LOT of time rehearsing for this show, something like 60 hours in the days leading up to the event, with and without the rest of the performers. As a band leader, I enjoyed being able to see how everything came together in the background to make this happen, how everyone else worked through their own parts in the production, beyond just my role. This footage from Local 12 News in Cincinnati highlights some of the work that went into rehearsals.

I was honored to be involved in a Bootsy Collins production. Bootsy has played such a major role in the music industry for decades, and continues to do so now, so it was really a special experience to be part of his vision for this tribute show.

It was also an honor to play alongside John Blackwell, who was Prince’s drummer for ten years. He is a monster drummer. Anyone who played with Prince for that long has got to be a master at their craft, and John certainly fits that description. And anyone who has played with me knows I demand a lot out of my drummers, and I couldn’t have asked for better. My experience with John both onstage and off was nothing short of wonderful.

What it was like to put on Prince’s shoes for a night

Kelly Richey - Prince Tribute - Photos by ScholleI’ve always been a huge fan of Prince as a guitar player. I always wanted to hear him play more, but being that he was so brilliant in so many areas, there was only so much spotlight to go around for his many talents. Still, I recognized his brilliance on the guitar.

But until the invitation came up to play in this tribute, I’d never actually performed a Prince song before. To step into the role of taking on ‘When You Were Mine’ and the solo in ‘When Doves Cry’ was a fun challenge that I welcomed wholeheartedly. But I also took this opportunity very seriously and put a lot of work into getting it right. Not only did I want to perform well, I wanted to get everything out of this learning experience that I could.

‘When You Were Mine’ is a pretty “poppy” song, with a great guitar part. I won’t ever pretend to think I’m on the same level as Prince, any more than I can pretend I’m a pop singer, so at first I wasn’t even sure how I’d be able to embody this song enough to perform it well. But now? I walk around singing it all the time. And then the solo in ‘When Doves Cry’ – wow. I love that solo, and I had to work really, really hard at getting it down with enough confidence to do it justice.

While we were preparing for the show, I asked the music director if we’d be able to include ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps.’ Prince famously played his rendition of the guitar solo in this Beatles tune at his 2004 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside Tom Petty and Steve Winwood, in tribute to the late George Harrison. At first, I was told No, we can only do Prince songs – but eventually the director got back with me and said “I’ve got the solo worked in for you, just figure out where it might go.” So I added it to the end of ‘When Doves Cry.’ I’m glad we got to include that piece, a nod to one of the most memorable performances towards the end of Prince’s career.

The entire experience was thrilling for me. To be able to enter that space, to play that solo, to stand in for Prince the guitar player and give him all my heart through my performance, was just beyond words. I’m so thankful to have been included in this experience.

Here are some more of my favorite photos from the tribute.

On Friday, May 20, the Kelly Richey Band played at esteemed blues bar Stevie Ray’s in Louisville, KY. Thanks to everyone who came out for this great show! It’d been over a year since I last played Stevie Ray’s and it was my pleasure and privilege to return to this venue — one of the oldest blues bars in town. Special thanks to fan David Evans for capturing the above photo, and as always, to my bandmates Tobe Donahue and Rikk Mullins.

Callahan's Music Hall - The Kelly Richey BandAs always, the band had a great time playing the legendary “Martha’s Midway Tavern Music and Dance Hall” this past Saturday night. The Midway is located just outside of South Bend, Indiana in the town of Mishawaka.  Albertina, the club’s owner, was there and she was dressed to the nine’s!  If you don’t know the history on this club, be sure to read the story, as this is a very special historic landmark for music venues in this country!

Kelly Richey Band:

Here is the Kelly Richey Band lineup for 2016! Back by popular demand featuring Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue on drums, and Rikk Manning on bass guitar. WOW! I had more fun and positive fan responses in 2015 than in any other year in regard to my rhythm section. I can’t wait to hit the stage with these guys again in 2016. We’ll be dishing out a new FRESH set of material (with some older KRB favorites here and there) with a killer new sound from my new CD release, “Shakedown Soul” that is totally ROCKIN’…! I’m so excited to be sharing the stage with these uber talented and genuinely nice guys. We are definitely going have a blast, and we can’t wait to rock the house for our fans!

RIKK MANNING BIO:

From Dayton, Ohio, Rikk is a rock solid, high energy bassist demonstrating blistering technical skill, solid groove, pure energy, and a few unique tricks up his sleeve. He displays a wide range of ability working in genres from progressive rock/jazz fusion (performing with the Michael Harris Tranz-Fusion to hard funk (as a writing and performing member of Funtime Freddy — all the way to classic R&B and jazz standards (performing with vocal/bass duo The Mannings. That just names a few of the musicians that Rikk has worked with during his extensive career.

Rikk is not only an accomplished performer, he is a composer and producer in his own right. Rikk’s debut solo single “Right out of the Gate” featuring performances from powerhouses Chris Carver on keys, John Arthur Gentry Jr. on guitar, Jason Palmer on drums, and special guest Philip Lassiter on trumpet was released in March 2015. The single is true to the style of Rikk’s influences, such as: Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Geddy Lee, Adam Nitti, Jaco Pastorius, Jermaine Morgan, Marcus Miller, Rocco Prestia, Roger Waters, and Victor Wooten.

Rikk recently joined forces with the Kelly Richey Band and has this to say: ”The opportunity to collaborate and perform with Kelly Richey could not have come at a more perfect time in my career. Raw power and technical prowess rooted in blues is exactly where I want to stretch my musical legs right now. Being able to get out on the festival circuit this summer to share this passion with Kelly and her dedicated fan base is a true pleasure!”

Rikk is a family man with a wife and two young daughters. He and his wife are very involved and connected to the community in their small town outside of Dayton, Ohio. His family sponsors several events throughout the year for the Carrie Vanderbeek Memorial, which is a yearly scholarship awarded through Muse Machine of Dayton, Ohio to help one graduate of Valley View High School interested in the study of the arts pay for college tuition.

Rikk played bass on the new Kelly Richey album, “Shakedown Soul”, lending his ultra talented musicianship to the record for a fresh new sound that delightfully holds the bottom end down in ways that take the craft of bass playing to amazing new heights.

TOBE “TOBOTIUS” DONOHUE BIO:

Tobe Donohue is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been producing music and performing with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and modern music for years. Head engineer and producer for the last fifteen years for Bootzilla Productions, Tobe’s worked with Bootsy Collins in the studio and shot commercials with athletes including LeBron James and big name actors like Samuel L. Jackson.

Tobe played in the alt rock group, “LAZY ROCKET” for 10 years as a drummer, DJ and programmer (sequencer sampling, etc.), and he’s played with Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Buckethead, Color Me Badd, DJ Hit-Tek, Creeper Lagoon, Glue, Headtronicks, MC Paul Barman. Currently, in addition to the Kelly Richey Band, Tobe is performing with Iswhat?!, Algorhythmix, Weathered Feather, Piahkhan, and Fam Gemz.

Tobe also runs his own record label and studio, Manimal Records, established in 2001. As a side project Tobotius and Freekbass also performed together as Freekbot. In addition, Tobe heads Animal Crackers, the US champions in 2007 of the coveted Technics DMC Award.

In 2014, Tobe produced “The Kelly Richey Band LIVE at The Blue Wisp”, and since February 2015 he has filled the role of Richey’s production engineer for building her new solo show. In addition, Tobe engineered and produced Richey’s upcoming CD “Shakedown Soul” and also played drums for the record, incorporating DJ scratching and sequencing. In Spring of 2015, he took to the stage as Richey’s drummer for the years’ festival shows, and will continue doing so in 2016.

Cincy Winter Blues Fest 2016

Cincy Winter Blues Fest 2016

The Kelly Richey Band hit the stage right after the amazing Carolyn Wonderland at the Cincy Winter Blues Fest last night.  This annual, well-attended event was held in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, at the stately Phoenix.  The beautiful, historic building was packed full of blues fans and blues musicians.  The weather was perfect (well, for a Cincinnati winter night, that is!) and the timing couldn’t have been better all the way around for KRB, as we got to play our new show in our very own hometown AND release our new album “Shakedown Soul” to our fans in person!

Rikk Manning (bass) and Tobe Donohue (drums, DJ scratching) were absolutely on fire, and each song felt like I was driving a well-designed freight train with just the the tips of my fingers!  We had a blast, so if this is any sign of what lies ahead for us this year, I can’t wait to see how far we take this musical experience!  We can’t wait to tour and bring our music to YOU and our fans all over the country!

Here’s some photos taken by my long-time band photographer Sonya Ziegler— from front and center row:

Shakedown Soul CD Release:

“Shakedown Soul” is Kelly Richey’s 16th album in her 35 year career as a Master guitar slinger. The album is an unprecedented mix of urban/indie in-your-face, raucous rock n roll, blues, funky bass grooves, and synthesized electronica— complete with DJ scratching and drum loops; with added elements like horns, strings, and synth sequencing that combine to make “Shakedown Soul” a one-of-kind, phenomenal sonic wall of sound that will have you foot stomping and head banging one minute and completely mesmerized the next. Richey’s husky alto vocals and raw, ultra personal songwriting will leave you introspective, speechless and wanting more. Her guitar work on this album is truly exceptional— the songs retain her signature Strat sound, but Richey steps out of the box to incorporate new melodies and synthesized guitar sounds that sit perfectly within the concept of the album.

“Shakedown Soul” is a studio album superbly mixed and mastered by producer, Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue and features a group of extraordinary musicians and back scene talent all collaborating to make the finest piece of work that Richey has done to date. All the songs are original, and feature Richey on guitar and vocals, Rikk Manning on bass, and Tobe Donohoe on drums, scratching and synths. In “You Wanna Rock” and “Love” you can hear some of Richey’s early influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Free, and Bad Company. The song “Lies” is influenced by Sheryl Crow’s self titled album, and the tracks “Afraid To Die” and “The Artist In Me” are haunting tunes that reflect the influence producer Daniel Lanois and artist Emmy Lou Harris’s “Wrecking Ball” album had on her. Add to that list “Just like A River” and you have three songs taken from Richey’s poetry and reflect her influence for artist Patti Smith— while musically being influenced from bands like the Smithereens and early Chrissy Hinds of the Pretenders. “I Want To Run” draws on straight forward power chords and powerful riffs that pull from influences like Lenny Kravitz. “Only Going Up” and “I Want To Run” is where you’ll find a classic example of where rock and roll and electronica meet face to face! Richey approached the writing and recording from a strip-downed perspective, writing the majority of this material to both rock and hip-hop drum loops. Heavily influenced by the work of early Black Keys, Jack White and Led Zeppelin, Richey handed her songs to Tobe to “do his thing”. Richey said to Tobe and Rikk, “You make me cool and you make me relevant and I’ll make you rock!” Indeed she did! Tobe brings his unique bend of heavy funk, electronica, D.J. production to each song, and Rikk manning completes the groove with his spectacular bass playing.

Never one to rest on her laurels, Richey has crafted her finest album to date, featuring ten stellar songs that are guaranteed to blow you away whether you are an old fan or new. Be prepared for an astonishing, intense sonic experience that will leave you with your jaw on the ground!

If You Wanna Rock – We’re Gonna Roll!
Kelly Richey’s “SHAKEDOWN SOUL”

“Shakedown Soul” has been a journey filled with profound personal growth, just as all of my prior sixteen CD’s have been. Let me tell you the story:

I went to Duane Lundy at Shangri-La Productions in December 2014 with 5 songs that I’d written to drum loops. I wanted to cut them live with drummer Robby Cozensa, Robby is a brilliant drummer and we approached the sessions like the White Stripes and The Black Keys— raw, real and organic. We added bass and keys, mixed, and did a basic mastering process. I also recorded two music videos, “Love” and “Afraid To Die” for release in February and March of 2015 and started booking and playing shows.

During my continued writing for “Shakedown Soul”, I had begun putting together a solo show and hired Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue to help me design my “spaceship” with loops, beats and new exciting elements that were cool and fun to work with. I was having a blast! While working with Tobe one day I asked him to play a set of drums set up in his studio— Woah!!! I was taken aback! He sounded like John Bonham and the loops he gave me that day sounded like a blend of blues, rock, funk and hip-hop— just what I’d dreamed of playing to in a solo setting.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerCurious, I asked Tobe if he would consider playing festivals only with me, (if I could find a bass player that made him want to play!) He said he would consider it, but stressed that he too wanted to do something that was fun, creative and inspiring. I went on a search and after several weeks of looking I found Rikk Manning. Tobe, Rikk and myself met up in my studio with the new songs and songs from my most recent live CD, started playing and, WOW magic began to happen! During the course of 2015, I played over 25 festivals and concerts with my new rhythm section and I’ve honestly never known such musical or professional happiness! I had long-time Kelly Richey Band fans saying, “This is the best I’ve every heard you sound”, and, “I’ve never seen you having so much fun AND where on earth did you find these awesome guys!!!???”

All the while, I kept song writing and I wrote some of the strongest material I’ve written to date….songs that access the deepest parts of my soul. The writing process was interwoven with my training to become a facilitator for Women Writing for (a) Change (WWF(a)C) where I had three week long workshop intensives this summer to write and develop. That has been a very rewarding experience and one that I will treasure forever.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerIn early October of this year I attended a writing workshop with Mary Gauthier, one of my absolute favorite songwriters of all time, and there I wrote the last song for the new CD. I called it, “I Want To Run”— a deeply personal and prophetic song that captured many of the struggles I faced and have continued to face as an artist and a human being. I give song writing credit to Mary as her advice throughout the workshop helped me to see the song that needed to be written. She helped me find the truth I was afraid to write about and ultimately afraid to face. Songwriting credits on “Shakedown Soul” are also given to Sonya Ziegler because she has been my musical sounding board for over five years now— she was very much involved in the development of my solo show, my acoustic CD “Finding My Way Back Home”, my poetry book “Whisperings – A Collection Of Poems By Blues Guitarist Kelly Richey”, my last studio CD release “Sweet Spirit”, and now “Shakedown Soul”.

The angst, joy, new growth in learning to accept myself, facing some hard truths and fears, and personal development process I’ve been through this past year has been just that, a “shakedown” of my very soul.

This past October I celebrated being sober now for 6 years but it’s just recently that I’ve started into a 12-step recovery process because I find that as a person with an addictive personality, being an “a-holic” continues in the form of negative patterns and ways of behaving until really being dealt with. For me, I’m a workaholic and the struggle with self worth is non-ending. There is no amount of success that can heal such wounds, so I’m happy to share that this year has presented many things to be thankful for— sobriety for 6 years, an amazing collection of friends that support and love me, Sonya Ziegler whom has stood by my side through the difficulties that a busy career and personal struggles presented, my mom and dad for loving me unconditionally, and you— each and every one of you who’s taking the time to read these words.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerAfter touring with my band this summer and sharing so much magic on stage, I knew that I wanted Tobe to produce the CD— and I asked for he and Rikk to play on the tracks. During the recording process we didn’t even see each other, as we all have our own personal recording studios, we all trusted each other musically. I asked Tobe to bring in elements of his production skills like “scratching”, DJ work, and his hip-hop and funk background from years of production work with Bootsy Collins, and I said “Dude, make me cool!” And he did… coupled with Rikk Manning’s stunning bass work throughout these tracks; laying down the best and deepest bass grooves I’ve EVER heard in my life! WOW— I’m thrilled! Sonya Ziegler did the amazing artwork and photography for the CD, and designer Gary Kelley put it all together. Their team work to bring Sonya’s artistic master to print is the icing on the cake. Me, I just play guitar and sing! LOL!

I’m proud to introduce to you “Shakedown Soul”— and I’m releasing this to my fan base first, before taking the CD to national press and radio. With your order, you’ll get an immediate FREE download of ”Shakedown Soul” to listen to while you wait for the hardcopy of the CD’s arrival on your doorstep.

I Thank you in advance for giving me a place to land in this crazy and wonderful musical landscape. I can’t wait for you to hear “Shakedown Soul”!

Kelly Richey – Home Sweet Home!!!

Kelly Richey – Home Sweet Home!!!

I got in late last night after a 13-hour drive home from Byron’s in Pomeroy, IA.  Byron’s is a priceless venue — it’s one of the priceless venues still cherished by a touring artist.  The crowds are always kind and their mission is to support live music! It’s REFRESHING to the soul!

Byron “gets it” and so do his patrons — you feel the vibe when you walk in the door.  Byron’s seats about 60 people and serves popcorn and frozen pizza. The wait staff does a great job, everyone is friendly, and when the music starts, people shut up and listen!

Here’s what I know about Pomeroy, IA:  I’ve never seen a street light; Main Street in one block long; if the club is closed when you get to town, there’s no cell signal to call someone to let you in; and if you stand in front of the club and yell “BYRON” a few times, pretty soon you’ll see a Toyota Prius pull up with a Dead-head-hippie-type in pastel tie-dye overalls emerge to give you a bear hug — that alone is worth the drive!

Roger D. Feldhans is the local photographer and almost never misses a show.  At the end of every show I’m always handed a freshly printed 5 x 7 photo of me performing as a souvenir.  I don’t think I’ve ever left Byron’s empty handed OR without a smile on my face.

If you’re ever in IA, add this to your bucket list!  Here are a few pictures from the show, I hope you enjoy!
