Local Musicians Honor King Records:
Queen City Kings is an intimate concert series that recreates the King Records recording experience while telling the radical history of Cincinnati’s original record label. Queen City Kings features stories about the music, the musicians, and the personal relationships at King Records that had an enduring impact on American music. The first performance of the series, Love Songs & the Blues will take place on Thursday, August 17th at 7:00 pm in the Black Box Theater at the Contemporary Arts Center.
Queen City Kings will engage the audience with the musicians, while listening to the live performance through headphones. The live audience is part of the recording, the story, and this new rendition of King Records artistry. Queen City Kings is a project developed by musicians Yemi Oyediran, JP Leong, and Kayla Waldron in association with People’s Liberty.
“The legacy of King Records and Syd [Nathan] is something most Cincinnatians don’t even know about,” said Leong. “Those who do know, realize how important the stories of artists like Little Willie John, Cowboy Copas, and James Brown are to the history of modern music.” Waldron added, “We meet touring musicians all the time who come to Cincinnati to pay homage to King. Rock & Roll, R&B, Soul… they all have their roots in this city.” Oyediran agrees, ”the impact of King Records is inspiring. Queen City Kings is about honoring Cincinnati’s place in music history.”
