A Musician’s Creative Journey: Week 15 – Creative Mindfulness

A Musician’s Creative Journey

If you missed it, you can read Week Fourteen of my Musician’s Creative Journey, where I explore symbols, memory, and what endures.

This post is the latest installment of my ongoing series, A Musician’s Creative Journey — a weekly practice of reflection through music, writing, and daily life.

In Week 15, I find myself reflecting on the creativity that happens through mindfulness.

There’s a difference between snapping a photo on the phone that’s always in my hand and deliberately packing up a camera — charging the battery, selecting the right lens, and setting out ready to capture whatever speaks to me. That intentionality is its own form of mindfulness. It feeds my soul, keeps me present, and creates a roadmap for reflection.

My camera pulls my attention away from the noise and distractions of the day, allowing me to follow my Muse — wherever it leads.

Thank you for being part of this creative journey.

Day One

April 9th, 2026

With spring comes the tulips…
and the reminder that beauty always finds its way back.

For the last two months I visited the Cincinnati Nature Center—the trees were missing their leaves, the sky was gray, and there was a chill in the air. It’s warmer now. The flowers are in full bloom, and my neighbor’s tulips wave as I walk by.

For so many years I spent traveling—no time to stop between gigs. I dreamed of the day when I would be able to stop, sit peacefully, enjoying the flowers—finally that dream has arrived.

Day Two

April 10th, 2026

Not all who wander are lost —
sometimes the wandering is the way.

It was Christmas. I was in my late thirties. I was given a “Life is Good” shirt that read “Not all who wander are lost.” I remember reading the words on the shirt as I held it up, we laughed, and for years, I wore that t-shirt with pride! But I still remember how I felt as we laughed.

Yes, I was the wanderer, the dreamer—the musician.

It was second grade. I was excited to get my report card. It read—Kelly doesn’t work and play well with others. Fifth grade. Another report card. It read—Kelly often daydreams, she shouldn’t sit close to windows. Sixth grade. I.Q. test. My status of “not so smart,” was changed to “must be lazy.” I wasn’t lazy—I was bored.  I wasn’t daydreaming—I was planning my escape.

To wander, one must dream. To dream, one must escape— the trappings of what’s expected by others and embrace whatever calls from within.

As an artist, I do not feel special— I often feel weird, out of place, outspoken, misunderstood. Being a wanderer can be lonely, but traveling with others can be hard.  When you wander, you don’t get a map, you often get lost, you learn to find your way—or you don’t.

I strongly believe we are all special, we are all artists in our own way, we all dream—whether we realize it or not, we are all flying without a net. But we don’t all wander. We don’t all follow our dreams. We don’t all escape.

Wandering and dreaming go hand-in-hand— but how we navigate determines the gifts we receive.

I believe dreams are meant to be a journey, not a destination. Our talents define what we do, not why we do it.

I like my t-shirt. I still have it. I still wear it. I still laugh.

I still wander!

Day Three

April 11th, 2026

A quiet reminder of how easy it is to forget what is sacred…
how fragile things really are…
and how much we share, whether we realize it or not. We’re all in this together.

We have symbols. They hold meaning. These symbols represent what we stand for, and their meaning helps to define what we believe.

When I look at the world around me, I have to believe that we can find our way back—to each other, and to a common belief that every person is equal in the eyes of God.

Day Four

April 12th, 2026

Take time to find beauty in each day —
where you place your focus shapes the life you see.

Tulips — tulips — tulips — they’re everywhere!

I’d never heard of black tulips, so I took a road trip to see them for myself. (More on that below.) What I discovered: black tulips are actually deep purple once you get close enough to see. A reminder to search for the beauty that’s so easy to miss.

Day Five

April 13th, 2026

I took this photo of Kat Von D at the Black Tulip event in Vevay, Indiana.
Moments like this remind me how much art shapes the way we see and feel the world.
Art and artists make life richer.

Earlier this month I made an afternoon outing to Vevay, Indiana, to witness the 15,000 black tulips Kat Von D planted outside her mansion there. The public was invited to view the tulips, and the response was remarkable — swarms of visitors descended on this little Indiana town.

It was inspiring to see what she created, both for and with the community.

One artist. One community. One dream that unites and rises above all odds.

Day Six

April 14th, 2026

A broken garden sculpture —
discarded on a playground.
An old man with wisdom still in his eyes.

I find the strangest things — beauty discarded, interesting stories untold, left behind, yet to reach their conclusion. Even a broken piece of artwork is beautiful, just the way it is.

The Chinese have a tradition that when a vase is broken, they glue it back together with gold woven into the cracks. I thought of that when I saw the beauty in this old man’s face.

We will all be lucky to get old one day. I pray that as my journey continues, there will be rays of light that shine through the cracks, left behind from all of the lessons I have faced.

Day Seven

April 15th, 2026

Take a seat.
Find a beautiful place to simply witness.
Sometimes a single grounding moment is all we need…
and they’re always around us.

Just a bench in the forest. Someone took the time to make it and put it in place — an invitation to pause, reflect, and walk again.

Wrap Up

This concludes Week 15. I remain committed to this creative journey, taking it one day at a time. I’ve had breakthroughs in my creative process, continued to take photos, and looked at the world around me for what speaks.

Each image I share serves as a thumbnail — a steady reminder to pause, reflect, and stay the course.

Bye for now… Week Sixteen coming soon.

An Invitation to Write

Set a timer for ten minutes. Write without stopping. Don’t edit, don’t second-guess — just let it come.

Writing Prompts:
Write about what you hold as valuable and why. Describe how the role that art, imagery, and the world around you  help you shape who you are today.

Resources:
Stewart Copeland & Martyn Stewart — Wild Concerto
Former Police drummer Stewart Copeland teamed up with naturalist Martyn Stewart to create a symphonic album where animals are the soloists and humans play backup. Built from Stewart’s archive of 100,000 wildlife recordings, the music pairs orchestral instruments with the calls of wolves, hyenas, owls, and hundreds more — turning nature’s voices into the lead performers. P.S. My Substack is growing. It’s a space to go deeper beyond the weekly posts into the thoughts and questions that don’t fit neatly into a caption. I’d love for you to join me there.
