The live audience is part of the recording, the story, and this new rendition of King Records artistry. Queen City Kings is a project developed by musicians Yemi Oyediran, JP Leong, and Kayla Waldron in association with People’s Liberty.

“The legacy of King Records and Syd [Nathan] is something most Cincinnatians don’t even know about,” said Leong. “Those who do know, realize how important the stories of artists like Little Willie John, Cowboy Copas, and James Brown are to the history of modern music.” Waldron added, “We meet touring musicians all the time who come to Cincinnati to pay homage to King. Rock & Roll, R&B, Soul… they all have their roots in this city.” Oyediran agrees, ”the impact of King Records is inspiring. Queen City Kings is about honoring Cincinnati’s place in music history.”

The Kelly Richey Blues-Rock Power Trio brings its hard-hitting, gritty brand of electric blues to The Greenwich in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 18 at 8pm. Richey is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and songwriter, who bluesman Lonnie Mack once described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body, with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.”

Guitars 4 Vets

Guitars 4 Vets

I spent Friday morning teaching guitar to vets at the VA hospital– what an honor!  We worked on fundamentals, building a strong foundation, and everyone is learning to play “Hey Joe”!  Music truly is a universal language.  The human connections that it builds continues to amaze me. (Guitars 4 Vets)

Music is a powerful bridge, one that’s often overlooked in society.  For the artist, music is a form of self expression.  For the listener, music is an invitation to connect and an opportunity to reflect.  I do believe that we are all artists and music in just one modality.

I often ask myself where I would be without music…?  It’s helped form the life that I live, the lessons I’ve learned, the people that I’ve met along the way.

Below are some photos from Friday’s session.  Please be sure to visit Guitars for Vets national website so you can learn about this program!guitars-for-vets-2

Guitars for Vets

Thousands of our war Veterans are afflicted with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In fact, more soldiers have committed suicide since the Vietnam War than have died in actual battle. But many are finding hope in an unlikely place: behind the wood and strings of an acoustic guitar. The healing power of music helps soldiers cope. That’s why we provide veterans with guitars and a forum to learn how to play. But we can’t do it without your help. Please read on to learn more out about the program and how you can help those who served rediscover their joy through the power of music.guitars-for-vets-4

Kelly Richey News & Updates 6.29 – July is for Festivals

LAST WEEK

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE at the Redmoor – Cincinnati, OH

the kelly richey band live at the redmoor june 24 2016

I always love it when I get the chance to play a venue in Cincinnati, where I have lived for the last twenty years, making it something of a second hometown. The Redmoor is a unique theatre-style venue in the neighborhood of Mt. Lookout with an intimate, walk-right-up-to-the-stage environment , making it a joy to play. From the stage I could see lots of familiar faces and friends in the audience. It was also great to play alongside Rikk Manning (bass) and Tobe Donahue (drums) – they are my dream rhythm section.

Kelly Richey solo at Third Street Cigar – Waterville, OH

John Henry is the owner of the Third Street Cigar Bar in Waterville, outside Toledo, and he has a real knack for hand-selecting some of the best bands to play his venue. He is a real music lover and a supporter of the blues, and it was an honor to work together with him to make this solo show happen. There was a great mix of people in the crowd – and it was a crowd who was really there to hear the music, not just have me on in the background while they ate and drank. You never know who you’re gonna get with some of these smaller bar gigs…

Want to book Kelly Richey solo or with the band? Get in touch.

Music 4 Change

Music 4 Change is a non-profit 501c3 school program that Kelly Richey started in 2005. Kelly’s goal for Music For Change is to bring music and inspiration to Elementary and High school students (especially in low-performing schools), and Universities across the USA.  Kelly feels very passionate that music (and the Arts in general), be kept alive in schools, since so many Art and Music programs have been drastically cut from school curriculum in the past 15 years.

Kelly Richey LIVE

About Kelly Richey: Kelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there; to date logging an extraordinary 1,000,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 30-year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey has toured in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Born in Lexington, Kentucky but now based in Cincinnati, Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, a staggering 4,000 gigs later, she more than earns the title of master guitarist and singer/songwriter. She has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Robben Ford, Warren Zevon, and James Brown.  Richey has fronted her blues/rock power trio, The Kelly Richey Band since the early 1990’s, and she also performs an intense, dazzling solo show incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, looping, beats, electronic sound synthesis, and some of her more personal acoustic material.

The Kelly Richey Band News & Updates

The Kelly Richey Band News & Updates:
Hello everyone!  Even with the holidays approaching, the Kelly Richey Band has been busy as usual! We had a short break from our last mini weekend tour, then hit the road this weekend starting on Friday with an early morning (it was SO early morning, even Starbucks wasn’t open!) television show in Louisville, Kentucky at station WHAS.  We were featured on WHAS’s morning show called “Great Day LIVE”.  This was the second time we’ve been on the show, and it was great fun to be in front of their huge TV cameras! We got to play two songs live, “Fast Drivin’ Mama” and “I Went down Easy”, both songs off my Sweet Spirit CD.  Thanks WHAS for having us on!

Later that evening I had a solo gig, a cameo appearance at a special wine/handcrafted beer bar and entertainment venue called The Art of Entertaining located in Cincinnati in the O’Bryonville area.  According to owner Julie Renner-Dowty, this was the last “Vine and Dine” of the year, so it was really a special night for all. I sat in with Terry Metcalf’s rhythm section, the brilliant Pete Pemberton on drums and Ross on bass. We jammed hard for over an hour, until it was time to go; with no time to waste I loaded up and sped across town to load in and sound check at Legends Nightclub located on the West side of Cincinnati.  We’ve played at this venue many times previously and were very happy to see a lot of our local fans and some old friends who came out to see us play that night.  We had a blast playing, and hope everyone else did too!  Thanks to everyone for coming out, we really, REALLY appreciate your support!

The band got a night of rest, then Saturday we had to leave Cincinnati by 6:30 PM to make our gig in Louisville at Stevie Ray’s Blues Bar – show time at 9:30.  WOW what a night! We played hard, and gave it our all.  The crowd was awesome and we saw some old friends and made some new fans as well.  One couple even drove all the way from Minnesota just to catch our show!  We love fans like that! There was a lot of energy in the room and we played till 2:00 AM…with the crowd still wanting more!  We had a GREAT night!!! I want to extend a HUGE “thank you” to all who braved the cold to come out and see our show!

I want to announce that the next Kelly Richey Band show will be at held at a VERY special venue, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, located here in downtown Cincinnati.  We are SO pleased to be able to play here, as this club has hosted many a famous jazz/blues musician in its day.  What makes this night extra, EXTRA special, though, is that we will be recording our show live!!!  So we hope all of you can come out to this event!  We’d LOVE to see you there!  Our show will be held on Friday the 29th, with shows at 7:00 and 9:00 PM.  See you there!

I also wanted to mention that Sonya, our photographer, is back in Cincinnati for a couple of weeks over Thanksgiving and my birthday (November 30th).  She’s been on the road with us the last few days, getting photos of all of our shows and doing some portrait sittings before she heads back to California.  Sonya’s work is unique and brilliant. Her many years as a fine artist have really honed her eye– in short, she makes us look good…! Thank you so much Sonya!

As winter closes in I want wish all of you a happy and safe holiday season!  See you down the road!
