Featured Guitar Student Diana Rein:

Here is a clip of Diana Rein playing a riff right when she started lessons in 2013.
“I can’t believe how stiff my left hand was!!! So crazy to look back.” – Diana Rein

Here is a link of me Diana Rein playing “Mean Old World” after 10 months of instruction:

“Before taking lessons with Kelly, I was very scattered in my daily practice sessions. Kelly has given me focus and clear-cut exercises and songs to work on that are building my finger strength, speed, dexterity, rhythm, fret-board knowledge and musical feeling. Kelly is really great at helping me with my weaknesses and encouraging my strengths. She also knows how to challenge me just the right amount so that when I do achieve my goal for the lesson, I feel extra inspired and great about my progress.”

Guitarist Diana Rein Releases New Album, “Long Road”

(Los Angeles, CA) – Get ready to meet your fate when “The Six-String Siren,” guitarist Diana Rein, releases her highly-anticipated sophomore album Long Road (Street Date: Wednesday, May 18). Written, recorded and produced by Diana Rein, the disc features twelve original tracks on which Rein sings, plays lead, bass, and rhythm guitar. Long Road was mixed and mastered by Peter Duff at Grey Brick Studios in San Diego, CA.

In Mythology, Sirens were dangerous yet beautiful creatures that would lure sailors with enchanting songs and make them crash onto the rocky coast. It is said that some crews survived by inserting wax in their ears to keep from being compelled. But what if the music was turned up? What if it was amplified? What if there were soaring guitar tones that shook your bones and cut through to your soul? You’d be helpless.

On Long Road, Diana Rein displays a sharp tongue, driving blues-based guitar, and melodic solos. It won’t take long before you fall under her spell. The title track eases you into the album with the admission that life tried to steal her dream but “it’s been a long road and now I’m coming home, time forgives, lets me in, starting over.” With vocals and guitar solos intertwining in a call-and-response fashion, the melody keeps you floating on a sea of sound. “Wild One” punches the listener in the gut with its bone-rattling bass line and lead guitar riff. This sets the stage for what Long Road is about: Soaring guitar solos and thought-provoking lyrics. Some big attitude from a little lady. “I love to play the Blues till dawn, my main main is Stevie Ray Vaughan,” which also allows Rein to honor her biggest inspiration. “Livin’ Loud” exudes a swamp-y swagger, it’s Hendrix-esque ’60’s guitar solo driving home the point that loud is the way it’s going to be. “Greenlight” is a response to Doyle Bramhall Jr.’s “Greenlight Girl,” with driving drums that won’t let up and guitars that sound like a train steadily making it’s way into the stratosphere: “I’m gonna take you home tonight, it’s us and the spirits of the night, baby I won’t put up a fight, I want you now.”

“Rebel Without A Cause” was inspired by a James Dean photo, “hollowed eyes and hardened smile, come and talk to me a while,” with crunchy guitars and seductive vocals leading to a rhythmic guitar solo sure to get under your skin. “The Real Thing” features a funk/rock groove and lyrical sass proclaiming, “if all you want is a fantasy, babe you’re barking up the wrong tree.” With a lyrical grit and message of revenge that’s not for the weary, “Done Me Dirty” doesn’t spare anyone. Rein’s lead guitar oozes with a twang that means business and the vocals aren’t far behind. On “Don’t Walk Away” there’s an admission of betrayal; no one’s perfect and being honest is the only way to grow – “I know it’s hard to look at me, but if you did what would you see? That I’m damaged or unworthy of love anymore, or would you hold me tight and not keep score,” Rein sings with a soul-filled passion.

“Come Back Home” is about ‘coming back home to your strength and inner guidance when issues in life seek to derail you,’ explains Rein. There’s an authority in her vocals and the guitar licks are reminiscent of the late Duane Allman. The melancholy mood of “Wicked” leaves no stone unturned, where our psyche’s dark side can be allowed to come through and make its presence known in order to be better understood. Rein’s vocals on “Wicked” pierce the soul, while her lead guitar cries sadness and regret. “Down Down Down” begins with a porch-blues guitar solo coupled with haunting vocals that segues into a head-rockin’ guitar and drum beat which sends the message, “if you drag me in the fire I’ll kick never cower, just try to keep me down I’ll rise like a flower.” The guitar solos have an anthem-like quality that position themselves as the album’s climax. “Peace” is a bittersweet guitar instrumental written after the death of Diana’s beloved dog, Zoe. The melody in this song will embed itself into your soul and stir up heartfelt memories.

Focus On Blues Rock Power Trio

Focus On Blues Rock Power Trio
Influence and Style – Overview

Welcome to “Focus On Blues-Rock Power Trio”. Many of today’s most popular guitar players like Eric Clapton, Jimmy page, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, played in what’s called a “power trio”. In this article I’m going to focus on the essential techniques and specific elements that are used to play guitar in a blues-rock power trio.

Jimi Hendrix was my first influence and from him I learned the importance of sustain, delay, distortion, tube amps, speaker configuration, delays and the use of other effects for live performance and recording.  Billy Gibbons taught me articulation, tone, precision and how to be an essential part of a three-piece rhythm generating machine.  Led Zeppelin opened the door to power chords, riff driven, groove based rhythms and leads; the importance of creating musical space, articulation, speed, and also some chaos with a method to the maddness as they joined both rhythmically— with a form of syncopation I’d never experienced.

Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton and Cream Live was where I learned to jam with others and interact in a more tightly woven connection with a band, allowing a more complicated drummer approach to be my foundation rather than something I had to play to (or with).  Eddie Van Halen took everything I had learned about simplicity and added a layer of style and finesse that no one had ever seen.  I was heavily influenced by Eddie’s guitar tone and loved how Eddie Kramer mixed his guitar panned hard to one side in the mix while adding reverb panned hard to the opposite side, so a single guitar track sounded like you were in a stadium.  This was a drastic departure from the psychedelic sound of the 1960’s and early 1970’s guitar sound.  I never did a lot of tapping like Eddie, but I did begin to pull in pinch harmonics like I first discovered being used by Billy Gibbons.

Another big influence was Joe Walsh and the James Gang. For instance, Funk #49, a powerful riff-driven song with a groove that pulled from blues, rock, and funk. Then came SRV and I found myself getting back to the basics of guitar tone and eventually learned that tone started in your hands and on the neck of your guitar; from there the sound is amplified, not the inverse.

Jimmy Page

SRV had the biggest overall impact on my playing by influencing my right hand.  By the time SRV hit the scene I had developed all the speed I was going to develop and his right hand technique helped me take my playing to a whole new level by adding a left and right hand muting technique for either a funky sound or a “flat tire” approach when playing with a shuffle.  SRV’s ability to bend strings, command righteous tone out of each and every note of his guitar was something that sent me on a quest for the perfect tone, maximum amount of sustain, and overall groove that would rock people to the edge of their chairs.  His ability to emote drew me in.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

And then there as Roy Buchanan, quite possibly my favorite guitar player.  I saw Roy play live three times and all three times he played as a three piece.  Roy played with emotion and precision I’d never experienced, and he raised the bar even higher in my search of taking a “journey” with my guitar and creating a conversation with music alone.

Jeff Beck Wired and Blow by Blow was woven in along the way, showing me an example of a player that used his fingers instead of a pick.  Jeff also used his whammy bar differently than any other guitarist I’d seen.  Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush sprinkled in influence, as well…. and I almost forgot, Alex Lifeson of RUSH.

Here is a list of songs that influenced me when I was first learning to play:

Jimi Hendrix – Purple Haze, Hey Joe
Jimmy Page – Heartbreaker, Whole Lotta Love
Eric Clapton – Sunshine Of Your Love, Crossroads
Eddie Van Halen – Aint Talking Bout Love, You Really Got Me
Billy Gibbons – Heard It On The X, Tush
Joe Walsh – Funk # 49, The Bomber
Stevie Ray Vaughan – Pride And Joy, Couldn’t Stand The Weather
Roy Buchanan – Hey Joe, Down By The River, Turn To Stone
Jeff Beck – Blow by Blow and Wired Albums
Alex Lifeson – Whacha Doin’, Working Man

Here are three links to the guitar rigs of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and SRV:

Jimi Hendrix played a Strat through a MARSHALL JTM45/100 AMP, Univox Uni-Vibe, Octavia Fuzz, Wah, Fuzz Face

Jimmy Page played a Les Paul through a EL34 PLEXI 100 WATT MARSHALL AMP, 3 Effects— Vox Wah, MXR Phase 90 and Thermin, early Zeppeling days, he added a Fuzz Face (1968 to 1971)

Stevie Ray Vaughan played a Fender Strat through Black Face Fender Super Reverb and Fender Vibroverb AMPS, He also used 2 Tube Screamers and a Wah Pedal

Kelly Richey’s Guitar Rig:
(2) Fender Deluxe Reverb Amps w/ Band
(2) Fender Princeton Reverb Solo
Line Drive Pedal, Cry Baby Mini Wah Pedal, Boss Suppressor NS-2, (2) Ibanez Tube Screamer Mini Pedals, Eventide H9, Boss Mini Volume Pedal, TC Electronics Triple Flashback Delay, Boss DD-20 Digital Stereo Delay, Sure Wireless Guitar System

“SHAKEDOWN SOUL” is a 10-track album that deftly mixes blues, funk, electronica, and Richey’s signature gritty rock and roll. The ten tracks are woven together seamlessly with chunky guitar riffs, groove based, melodic bass lines, synthesized sounds, and in-your-face John Bonham-style drum grooves and loops. Richey augments foot-stomping rockers with blistering guitar work and husky vocals that swagger along a massive wall of sound that swirls and spins in layers with celestial glitches, DJ scratching, drum loops, horns, keys, strings, and synth sequencing into a hot mess of sonic candy that perfectly suits her raw, ultra-personal all-original song lyrics. “Shakedown Soul” features melodic, well-arranged songs that feel both ethereal and hard as concrete. Richey’s riff-heavy guitar is gritty and dirty, and she steps out of the box on this album to incorporate synthesized sounds with her signature Strat that masterfully complete each other.

Always finding new ways to shake up the blues/rock genre, her ballsy rock and roll guitar playing doesn’t disappoint. Insipid, she is not; instinctively peeling back the layers, Richey’s “Shakedown Soul” is a undeceptive sojourn that never makes excuses. Sonically lush, emotively raw and honest, “Shakedown Soul” is Richey’s finest work to date.

Good Things Going Around:

Cincinnati’s Kelly Richey Talks About Her Inspiration

I’d like to introduce you to Kelly Richey. Kelly is a Cincinnati based musician, writer and educator who has been described as  “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. Having shared the stage with many legends, she has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Kelly has been teaching guitar almost as long as she’s been playing; with over three decades of teaching experience under her belt, she is a deeply dedicated and inspirational guitar instructor who has taught well over 1,000 students to date.

Additionally, in 2009, Kelly founded Powered By Intention, a Coaching Consultancy designed to educate, motivate, and inspire people to identify their life’s true purpose and achieve the life of their dreams. And, she is president of Music4Change, Inc. a Cincinnati nonprofit organization committed to music education in today’s schools as a vehicle for human expression, cultural understanding, and academic achievement. Three specifically aligned programs offer live performance, lecture, interactive participation and facilitate learning opportunities for youth.

As if all of that weren’t enough, Kelly is a gifted writer and shares her talent as a facilitator for another nonprofit called Women Writing for a Change.

On Kelly’s website, she candidly shares her own, very personal story – her journey as a person who has dyslexia and ADHD, and how they impacted her determination and success, and desire to help others succeed.

“Having a reading disability has caused two dynamics for me:  1) I have an insatiable appetite now for learning and 2) I have a passion for teaching and helping others learn.  Nothing excites me more than to work with my students and clients… teaching, coaching, consulting,” she wrote.

“Had I not gravitated towards music and discovered books in audio form, I honestly don’t  know what I would have done.  My life would have turned out much differently, I’m sure.  What I know now is that there is no cookie cutter mold to learning.  I’m proof that even someone with severe dyslexia can learn to play a musical instrument….For many years having dyslexia negatively affected my self-esteem.  It wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I began to realize I might actually be rather intelligent.”

Please continue reading to learn more about Cincinnati’s music legend.

Good Going Around - Kelly Richey

GTGA: What is something people may not know about you?
Kelly: People mainly know me as a guitarist, singer/songwriter, recording artist, performer and guitar instructor, but there is an entire “other” side to my life.  I am a life coach and hold certifications as a Dream Coach and True Purpose Coach; I’m trained in Voice Dialog; and I recently became certified as a facilitator for Women Writing for a Change.  It is my deepest desire for my life’s work to weave together elements of musical performance and recording by teaching one-on-one and workshops, and life coaching and facilitating writing workshops for personal growth and community building.

GTGATell us about a challenge that you overcame in life and how it impacted you.
Kelly: I am dyslexic, so learning to read has presented me with a series of challenges throughout all stages of my life.  My dyslexia left me unable to succeed in school, as much of the understanding and support provided in schools today simply did not exist when I was in grade school.  Thanks to books in audio format, I’ve managed to work my way through hundreds of books over a lifetime committed to learning and self-education.

Here is an article on my blog, How Dyslexia Made Me a Better Teacher,  that addresses this in more depth.

GTGA: What are some of your simple pleasures?
Kelly: A great cup of coffee, conversation with a good friend, healthy places to eat out, and a good power-nap.

GTGA: What is one of your favorite childhood memories?
Kelly: One of my favorite childhood memories is listening to my grandmother tell me stories.

GTGA: Name three things on your Gratititude List.
Kelly: If I had to list three things I was most grateful for, they would be: all the great friends I’ve collected throughout my life, many of whom have been profound teachers; good health and strong constitution; and the ability make a living doing what I love.

GTGA: What is an accomplishment you achieved of which you are proud?
Kelly: Overcoming learning disabilities and finding a way to build a successful and sustainable career doing what I love.

GTGA: Tell us about someone who has been a positive influence on your life and why.
Kelly: My Uncle, Rev. Bob Brown, was one of my biggest influences. He was the preacher for the church where I grew up.  My uncle was a passionate preacher, teacher, storyteller and community builder.  Our church was the first church to integrate, and it was burned to the ground when I was 5 years old.  He was a leader in civil rights; he believed in separation of church and state; and he felt the church should be relevant if it was to serve in meeting the needs of people in their individual communities.

GTGA: What is a motto you live by?
We must first be in integrity with ourselves in order to be in integrity with others.

TRUEFIRE GUITAR INSTRUCTION – Kelly Richey is an instructor with TrueFire, the largest, most successful online guitar instruction school of it’s kind. The difference between the Truefire learning platform versus Kelly’s traditional one-on-one private instruction is that Truefire is not taught in real time– meaning that it’s a video exchange format: you video yourself playing and then send it to Kelly. She reviews it and then sends you a video where she addresses any issues she sees, answers your questions, offers instruction, and helpful critique of your playing. This is a great platform for guitar instruction if you have a busy, complicated schedule, as lessons can be recorded and viewed whenever convenient for you. Click Here to take you to Kelly’s Truefire classroom where you can learn more about the Truefire platform and how it works.

KELLY RICHEY – ABOUT

KellyRicheyLive-PhotosbySonyaZiegler-Hi-Res_10 copyKelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there; to date logging an extraordinary 1,000,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 30-year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey has toured in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Born in Lexington, Kentucky but now based in Cincinnati, Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, a staggering 4,000 gigs later, she more than earns the title of master guitarist and singer/songwriter. She has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Robben Ford, Warren Zevon, and James Brown.  Richey has fronted her blues/rock power trio, The Kelly Richey Band since the early 1990’s, and she also performs an intense, dazzling solo show incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, looping, beats, electronic sound synthesis, and some of her more personal acoustic material.

Richey has been teaching guitar almost as long as she’s been playing; with over three decades of teaching experience under her belt, she is a deeply dedicated and inspirational guitar instructor who has taught well over 1,000 students to date.  Richey teaches both privately and through the online teaching course with TrueFire.  Richey has put out a number of instructional videos and teaches several guitar workshops around the country.  Richey has a rock solid understanding of blues guitar techniques, which she passionately passes on to her students. She’s a warm, outgoing and dynamic guitar instructor with a unique teaching style who relates exceptionally well to her students no matter what their skill level or background may be. Her goal is to provide expert instruction tailored to meet each student’s individual needs, so that he or she can excel to full potential.

Here is the Kelly Richey Band lineup for 2016!  Back by popular demand featuring Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue on drums, and Rikk Manning on bass guitar.  WOW!  I had more fun and positive fan responses in 2015 than in any other year in regard to my rhythm section.  I can’t wait to hit the stage with these guys again in 2016.  We’ll be dishing out a new FRESH set of material (with some older KRB favorites here and there) with a killer new sound from my new CD release, “Shakedown Soul” that is totally ROCKIN’…!  I’m so excited to be sharing the stage with these uber talented and genuinely nice guys.  We are definitely going have a blast, and we can’t wait to rock the house for our fans!

The Kelly Richey Band at Thunder Bay Blues Festival

We had a blast this past weekend at the Thunder Bay Blues Festival!  The Thunder Bay Blues Festival staff were super nice– we’d like to give a shout out to say THANK YOU– we really enjoyed ourselves!  The weather was perfect and the crowd was amazing… the festival was located on the Northern shore of Lake Superior — wow — what a view!

Everything was great until the drive home… the water pump went out in the van and we were stranded just outside Duluth, MN.  A wonderful family (Linda and Mike Rosin) who lived across from where we broke down were kind enough to give Rikk and Tobe a ride to the Duluth airport to rent a car so they could get home to their families– and Sonya and I stayed behind while the van was serviced.  Thank you Mike and Linda! Your kindness and helpfulness were very much appreciated, and we will be sure to “pay it forward”!

The van broke down on Sunday — it’s Tuesday and we’re still stranded, however, the van is scheduled to be finished by this evening and we should (fingers crossed) be on our way back to Cincinnati by tonight.

Thank you to all who came out to see us play in Canada.  We look forward to coming back–  see you down the road!

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE – WE WILL ROCK YOU!

This past weekend the Kelly Richey Band hit the road for two festivals– unfortunately, the festival in Indiana was rained out, but the festival in Alpena, Michigan was alive and well. The weather was a little cooler than we expected, but once we started playing we warmed up quickly! The crowd was great, and we really appreciate all those who came out to see us! Check out the photos for KRB in action: Rikk Manning on bass guitar, and Tobe Donohue on drums (and DJ scratching) are two of the best matches for my guitar work to hit the stage yet! I’m thrilled to be playing with these two masterful musicians– we have a great time off stage as well as on, and I couldn’t be happier! Check out the photos below: (Photos by Sonya Ziegler)

Your eyes compromise my deepest desire
Your heart turned stone in the latest of hours
The artist in me is choking to see
The puppet in you keeps pulling us through
The mountain, the sun, no devil has won.

Kelly Richey News & Updates

Kelly Richey News & Updates

My only day off was spent in The Villages where a dear friend was kind enough to let us stay a few days in her summer home.  The Villages is a large community of (mostly) golfers, with great restaurants AND a Starbucks just one mile for the house.  Thank you John and Mary, I really appreciate your kindness and generosity!

On Saturday, we drove a few hours on back roads to a little town named Palatka where the Blue Crab Festival that I’ve played on several occasions is held.  Unfortunately a favorite spot of mine, Billy’s Downtown Blues, recently closed, but the locals who support music are still alive and well in supporting Billy and his wife Gaye to hold backyard ”house parties”.  Billy and Gaye’s home has a large backyard that had a stage and lights and plenty of seating.  I played to packed house– it was a mini rock concert and oh, so much fun!  Thank you Billy and Gaye for hosting this event, it was a blast!

On Sunday, we headed to Bradenton (near Sarasota) for a guitar instruction workshop and evening performance at Ace’s where I’ve played for a number of years.  My longtime friends who recently moved to this area from Michigan live just two miles from Ace’s.  After guitar lessons, and a live performance to a warm and welcoming crowd we grabbed our last nights sleep before heading home. Chista and Hugh are known for their hospitality and we awoke to fresh blueberries, mangos, chocolate croissants AND a cooler packed with healthy food for the long drive home!  Also, Christa and Hugh were kind enough to take Sonya on a mini-tour of the area so that she could take some photos.  Thank you Hugh and Christa, your hospitality was wonderful— and it was so nice to catch up with you!

Once on the road, we stopped at RVR Horse Rescue to visit one of my dearest, lifelong friends, Kitrina Kelly and see the amazing work being done to save animals that have been abandoned, abused, or no longer wanted. It was hot, but well worth the heat and bright sun to tour the rescue.  RVR Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization and is run strictly by volunteers.  It truly is an amazing place staffed with wonderful, loving, selfless women who give 100% to the animals they rescue.  RVR Horse Rescue has a fan page on Facebook which is updated regularly and has some wonderful stories of the horses they have rescued.  Please Facebook “Like” them— they would truly appreciate it! Sonya got some amazing photos— check these out: http://www.sonyaziegler.com

Back home to Cincinnati this week for two solid days of teaching and a recording session with the amazing Cheryl Renee before hitting the road again for more festivals and opening for Heart with the band! This will be a GREAT show, and we are very, very excited and honored to be opening for one of my all-time favorite bands!

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS HARD!!!

The Kelly Richey Band ROCKS HARD!!! – “Summer of LOVE” Tour 2015

Kelly Richey and her band returned to the stage kicking off their 2015 Summer Festival Season!  Never before has such power come from the stage with new material, a new album (almost completed) and, most importantly, raw energy that FAR surpasses any previous KRB shows.  Bassist Rikk Manning and Kelly Richey go toe-to-toe with riffs that send sonic waves through the stratosphere, and Tobe Donohue not only kills it on drums, but he scratches and adds his masterful electronic skills as one of today’s leading DJ’s with fresh, new sounds that take KRB to a new level of performance that blends jambase, rock-n-roll, blues, and a heavy dose of funk and hip-hop.  The band sounds GREAT, the audience is going wild, and we are killing it at every show we play.  Look out everyone, the KRB is headed your way and we intend to blow the roof off at every show we play!
