Kelly Richey Band Plays Franke Center

Kelly Richey Band Plays Franke Center in Marshall MI – Part 1

On Saturday, October 22nd, The Kelly Richey Band stepped on stage at the Franke Center, in Marshall MI,  for what would be a magical night of music!  The shows was part of the Eaton Blues Series– the venue was beautiful, the crew was fantastic, and the crowd was ready to hear some music! I was joined by Rikk Manning and Lonnie Buckley, and the result was one of pure magic! This truly was an amazing evening and the experience we shared that night on stage and with the audience, was one that I will cherish for years to come.

With over 4,000 shows under my belt, it’s shows like this that keep me inspired and loving what I do. Fortunately we had a video camera and were able to capture the entire show! I completed the edits for the first of two hours worth of music last night and posted it to my youtube channel late last night. I’m scheduled to complete edits for part 2 by first of the week– I’ll post the footage ASAP!

So, if you wanna rock– sit back, relax, grab your beverage of choice, and relive this musical journey with us…

I’d like to thank the Eaton Blues Society for having us play this year and I’d like to thank everyone who showed up and helped to create a magical evening!

Donna and Kelly Richey at the Niles Burn Run, July 9, 2016

Saturday, July 9 brought the band and me to Niles, Michigan for the 15th Annual Niles Burn Run festival. There I met my fan Michele and her friends Kari and Jennifer, who traveled all the way out from Greenville, MI – 137 miles away! – to see us play. Consider me humbled! I also snagged a photo with another fan, Donna – you can definitely tell I’d just come off the stage for that one. Rock’n’roll is sweaty work! It’s always a pleasure to meet fans like them. The band and I played well that afternoon and I was glad to have come out for this event.

RIGHT NOW

I’ve been back in the studio preparing material for my next album, which I feel will be a distinct shift from 2015’s SHAKEDOWN SOUL. This summer, thanks to my involvement with Women Writing for (a) Change, I’ve been writing more consistently than I ever have before in my life — all kinds of poetry and song lyrics and ideas that I’ve been recording in snippets on my iPhone as they strike me. I’ve got the time right now to get into the studio and start sorting through all of this raw material and see what kind of record comes out.

There’s only one person we know of that’s been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out,” and that’s the one-and-only Kelly Richey.

With over 30 years of experience as a professional independent touring musician, Richey fronts her power trio The Kelly Richey Band, has an unparalleled zeal for guitar, has taught more than 1000 guitar students, owns her record label company, is a certified life coach, is a record producer, and more. Simply said, she’s an all around bona fide bad-ass.

You have to see it to believe it, so head on over to her website to watch videos and more  at www.kellyrichey.com.

WiMN: Wow, first of all congrats on all of your achievements, album releases, and jam-packed tour schedule. Tell us about your two most recent albums The Kelly Richey Band Live at the Blue Wisp, and  Sweet Spirit. What makes them different from the 13 previous albums you’ve released?

KR: Sweet Spirit was recorded in Lexington, Ky., at Shangri-la Productions, produced and engineered by Duane Lundy. The Shangri-La Studio is a large warehouse with an amazingly cool vibe. We set up so we could record live and capture the raw energy I’m known for when I play live on stage.

This is the first studio release that I’ve recorded that truly captured the energy of a live performance giving us the ability to place our focus on arrangement and capturing the best live take. I was joined by funk master Freekbass and Robby Cosenza on drums. Originally I had written and recorded all the material in my home studio playing to just a drum loop. I was heavily influenced by Jack White and the Black Keys at this time, so I wanted to write to just a drum groove so I’d be forced to create guitar riffs and grooves that could stand alone. Once in the studio with Freekbass and Robby, Duane directed traffic and the result was a CD packed full of raw energy and the strongest collection of songs I’ve written to date.

The Kelly Richey Band Live at the Blue Wisp was recorded in Cincinnati, which is home-base for the Kelly Richey Band. With the release of Sweet Spirit, Freekbass and I joined forces live and began to tour in early 2013. This live CD is a reflection of the chemistry created during a years’ worth of non-stop touring during which the songs from Sweet Spirit were allowed to be opened up and develop a new life of their own– which only comes from playing live night after night.

Big Bamn joined forces with the band after touring with Bootsy Collins– consequently, Freekbass (a Bootsy Collins protégé) and Bamn are a force to be reckoned with musically. I’ve always wanted to have my energy matched on stage, and the two of them never fail!  This recording really captures the heart and soul of the band and is an accurate reflection of who we are: a powerful blues/rock power trio with a heavy funk and jam band influence.

WiMN: What was it that made you decide, “OK, I want to start my own record label”?

KR: Starting my own record label happened out of necessity. I was starting to tour and make records and needed distribution. At the time, the independent music concept was the new landscape. This, coupled by the fact that I’d been in a band that was signed to a major label and hence witnessed the cold, harsh reality that there is no guarantee in the music industry, made me choose the path that I felt best insured taking care of my own interests.

WiMN: What advice would you give to someone seeking to start their own record label?

KR: It really comes down to having enough motivation, cash flow, and business sense to record, release and promote your own product vs. having someone do that for you. There are absolute advantages to both! If someone else is going to sign you, you need to make sure they have the funding and the support you need, and that you do not become lost amongst their other artists. If you’re going to do it on your own, it’s a full-time job and you must function like a business!

WiMN: You’ve pretty much touched every aspect of being a guitarist: you’ve toured, taught, composed, produced, recorded and more. Of all the different aspects of guitar playing, which is your favorite and why?

KR: I’m torn between being on stage performing versus teaching people to play the guitar. I enjoy both a great deal and if forced to choose between the two, I would not be able to give up either!

WiMN: Tell us one of your biggest guitar student success stories.

KR: I’ve had many success stories along the way but this is the most recent. In early Nov. 2013, Diana Rein Polacek joined the world’s largest online guitar instruction school www.TrueFire.com and signed up to take guitar lessons from me.

I’ve been an instructor at Truefire for about a year now, and I very much like the instructional and teaching platform it presents for both students and teachers alike. After about six months of guitar instruction from me, Diana found a site called Giveit100, a place for people who have a passion that they want to excel at via sharing a short video of their progress every day for 100 days. Diana decided to take up the challenge and apply it to her guitar playing.

Diana picked one of my songs, “Mean Old World” to learn as the focus of her daily videos.  After just three weeks, here’s the process Diana has made. Quite frankly, I’m blown away by her committment  and dedication! I hope everyone takes a minute to watch some of these videos, as they are truly inspiring and clearly show the impact of what a dedicated practice routine can do to elevate one’s playing ability. No matter what you want to accomplish, it’s always done one step at a time, and here is an excellent example of someone doing just that with passion and determination. Kudos to Diane for all of her hard work!

WiMN: You released an instructional DVD titled Blues: On Steroids. What can students expect to learn?

KR: Note: These video instruction packages allow students immediate access to over 120 of my instructional videos, support tab and instruction manuals, PDF files, and MP3 Rhythm Tracks, and are only available online.  The Blues On Steroids videos can be used as a stand-alone instructional series, or they can be used as support materials when taking one-on-one guitar lessons with me via real-time video Skype. The video guitar instruction packages allow students at any level to move at their own pace while taking lessons from me from anywhere in the world. Individual lessons as well as lesson packages are available.

Here is a link to a full description of each product:  https://kellyrichey.com/blues-steroids/.

WiMN: You’re also a life coach. Tell us a bit about that.

KR: People often come to me because they see that I followed my dreams and carved out a career path that supported my greatest passions. After teaching guitar one-on-one and group workshops for over 25 years, in 2008, I began a journey to pursue life coaching certifications to expand my offerings. My coaching consultancy is designed to educate, motivate, and inspire people to identify their life’s true purpose and consequently, achieve the life of their dreams.

In addition to life coaching, I also offer music business consulting— expertise that I’ve honed from over three decades of being a performing independent musician. Here are a list of my certifications outside of my music business experience: Certified True Purpose Coach®, Certified Dream Coach®, Certified Dream Coach Group Leader®, and I’m also trained in voice dialog.

WiMN: Your playing style has been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan’s (NICE!). What does it feel like to be compared to such a huge maestro?

KR: It’s a compliment I do not take lightly! As an artist I do not feel like I could ever fill his shoes, so compliments like this inspire me to push forward as a guitarist, performer, and as an artist—  in ways that hopefully honor the legacy he left behind.

WiMN: What would you tell a young girl aspiring to succeed as a blues guitarist?

KR: You can do it!  Find a great teacher, practice every chance you get, work hard and seek mentors along the way! Most, believe in yourself 100%…!

WiMN: Share any exciting news lined up for the future.

KR: I’m working hard to build my online guitar instruction platform so that I can connect with as many guitar students as possible! I tour year-round but the vast majority of my dates are on weekends, so this allows me the freedom to teach and build a strong connection with my students during my off time.

I’m excited to announce that I recently shot my first guitar instruction series for TrueFire Online, the leading online guitar instruction classroom! This video series will be released in late fall/early winter and will further build my presence on Truefire’s powerful teaching platform (http://truefire.com/classrooms/sherpa_class.html?room=kellyrichey).

I had such a great time last spring opening solo for Robben Ford (who also just happens to be one of my guitar idols), that I have decided to do more solo shows and recording.  I have added a looper to my pedal board that allows me to create a backing track when I play. I can use that playing solo or with the band. My next solo show will be opening for the British band Wishbone Ash, in Mishawaka, Ind., (near South Bend) on Sunday, Sept. 14.

Wishbone Ash pioneered the harmony twin lead guitars format, so I am psyched to see that live!  I’m currently writing songs for my solo show, which I plan to record into a 4-song EP in Dec. I will continue to play with other musicians and to record with them, but for the moment I am enjoying going out on a limb and expanding my live performance and fostering my creative journey.

I’m booking festivals for 2015!  After much touring success and many festivals in new markets in the USA, Canada (and this October I will add Australia to the list), I’m actively booking dates for next year. I plan to perform with my band, perfrom solo, and also teach guitar instruction workshops. I look forward to what the new year brings!

RIKK MANNING BIO:

From Dayton, Ohio, Rikk is a rock solid, high energy bassist demonstrating blistering technical skill, solid groove, pure energy, and a few unique tricks up his sleeve. He displays a wide range of ability working in genres from progressive rock/jazz fusion (performing with the Michael Harris Tranz-Fusion to hard funk (as a writing and performing member of Funtime Freddy — all the way to classic R&B and jazz standards (performing with vocal/bass duo The Mannings. That just names a few of the musicians that Rikk has worked with during his extensive career.

Rikk is not only an accomplished performer, he is a composer and producer in his own right. Rikk’s debut solo single “Right out of the Gate” featuring performances from powerhouses Chris Carver on keys, John Arthur Gentry Jr. on guitar, Jason Palmer on drums, and special guest Philip Lassiter on trumpet was released in March 2015. The single is true to the style of Rikk’s influences, such as: Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Geddy Lee, Adam Nitti, Jaco Pastorius, Jermaine Morgan, Marcus Miller, Rocco Prestia, Roger Waters, and Victor Wooten.

Rikk recently joined forces with the Kelly Richey Band and has this to say: ”The opportunity to collaborate and perform with Kelly Richey could not have come at a more perfect time in my career. Raw power and technical prowess rooted in blues is exactly where I want to stretch my musical legs right now. Being able to get out on the festival circuit this summer to share this passion with Kelly and her dedicated fan base is a true pleasure!”

Rikk is a family man with a wife and two young daughters. He and his wife are very involved and connected to the community in their small town outside of Dayton, Ohio. His family sponsors several events throughout the year for the Carrie Vanderbeek Memorial, which is a yearly scholarship awarded through Muse Machine of Dayton, Ohio to help one graduate of Valley View High School interested in the study of the arts pay for college tuition.

Rikk played bass on the new Kelly Richey album, “Shakedown Soul”, lending his ultra talented musicianship to the record for a fresh new sound that delightfully holds the bottom end down in ways that take the craft of bass playing to amazing new heights.

Tobe Donohue is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and has been producing music and performing with some of the biggest names in hip-hop and modern music for years. Head engineer and producer for the last fifteen years for Bootzilla Productions, Tobe’s worked with Bootsy Collins in the studio and shot commercials with athletes including LeBron James and big name actors like Samuel L. Jackson.

Tobe played in the alt rock group, “LAZY ROCKET” for 10 years as a drummer, DJ and programmer (sequencer sampling, etc.), and he’s played with Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Buckethead, Color Me Badd, DJ Hit-Tek, Creeper Lagoon, Glue, Headtronicks, MC Paul Barman. Currently, in addition to the Kelly Richey Band, Tobe is performing with Iswhat?!, Algorhythmix, Weathered Feather, Piahkhan, and Fam Gemz.

In 2014, Tobe produced “The Kelly Richey Band LIVE at The Blue Wisp”, and since February 2015 he has filled the role of Richey’s production engineer for building her new solo show. In addition, Tobe engineered and produced Richey’s upcoming CD “Shakedown Soul” and also played drums for the record, incorporating DJ scratching and sequencing. In Spring of 2015, he took to the stage as Richey’s drummer for the years’ festival shows, and will continue doing so in 2016.

Our NEW CD will be available at the show!
Shakedown Soul:

“Shakedown Soul” is Kelly Richey’s 16th album in her 35 year career as a Master guitar slinger.  The album is an unprecedented mix of urban/indie in-your-face, raucous rock n roll, blues, funky bass grooves, and synthesized electronica— complete with DJ scratching and drum loops; with added elements like horns, strings, and synth sequencing that combine to make “Shakedown Soul” a one-of-kind, phenomenal sonic wall of sound that will have you foot stomping and head banging one minute and completely mesmerized the next.  Richey’s husky alto vocals and raw, ultra personal songwriting will leave you introspective, speechless and wanting more. Her guitar work on this album is truly exceptional— the songs retain her signature Strat sound, but Richey steps out of the box to incorporate new melodies and synthesized guitar sounds that sit perfectly within the concept of the album.  Never one to rest on her laurels, Richey has crafted her finest album to date, featuring ten stellar songs that are guaranteed to blow you away whether you are an old fan or new.  Be prepared for an astonishing, intense sonic experience that will leave you with your jaw on the ground!

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul

I wrapped up the Christmas weekend on Sunday with day one of my latest music video shoot, and all went very smoothly!  We got footage for two new music videos for two songs from my new album Shakedown Soul:  the first song we shot was the acoustic track (the album’s last song), a reprise of the opening tune, which is an all out electrified rocker titled “Fading”.  I wrote this song when I was 19 years old and it has remained one of my favorites throughout the years.  The song is about the struggles we face in finding our own voice, our own path in life, and our own way to love. (Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul – Photos by Sonya Ziegler)

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul - Photos by Sonya Ziegler

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul - Photos by Sonya Ziegler The second song we cut was “I Wanna Run” and this video was cut for my electric solo show.  I wrote this song while in Nashville at the songwriting workshop with Mary Gauthier.  This was the final song written for the new CD and it’s an uptempo blues-rock anthem that I can take to the stage solo or with the band.  As a guitarist and performer, this song is just plain fun to play and sing– it rocks so hard it’ll shake the paint off the walls!

I was in good hands with Chris Vogel behind the lens and Sonya Ziegler was running about capturing photos of the production.  I saw an occasional grin on his face so hopefully he got the footage he was looking for.  Today we’re scheduled to shoot one video with the whole band and plan to knock out or rather rock out “You Wanna Rock”!  This song is a power blues song with a drop D tuning, so Rikk Manning’s low end will lift the church up off the ground with only Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue, there to hold it down on drums!  I can’t wait!  I’ll post more photos as soon as I can!

Thank you for staying tuned in and keeping us turned on!  2015 has been a great year and I have a feeling that 2016 will be even better!

The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem
White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival

Check out this new video footage of The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem – from the White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival on August 14th, 2016.  I’d like to give a BIG shout out to John Berkey on the drums as he so mightily filled in for Tobe Donohue while his daughter was being born!  Rikk Manning KILLS it on his bass guitar solo — watch out!

This video was shot and edited by Moe Joe Vision — thank you for sharing this footage with us!

Enjoy!

Short Bio: Kelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there; to date logging an extraordinary 1,000,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 30-year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey has toured in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Born in Lexington, Kentucky but now based in Cincinnati, Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, a staggering 4,000 gigs later, she more than earns the title of master guitarist and singer/songwriter. She has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Robben Ford, Warren Zevon, and James Brown.  Richey has fronted her blues/rock power trio, The Kelly Richey Band since the early 1990’s, and she also performs an intense, dazzling solo show incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, looping, beats, electronic sound synthesis, and some of her more personal acoustic material.

Richey has been teaching guitar almost as long as she’s been playing; with over three decades of teaching experience under her belt, she is a deeply dedicated and inspirational guitar instructor who has taught well over 1,000 students to date.  Richey teaches both privately and through the online teaching course with TrueFire.  Richey has put out a number of instructional videos and teaches several guitar workshops around the country.  Richey has a rock solid understanding of blues guitar techniques, which she passionately passes on to her students. She’s a warm, outgoing and dynamic guitar instructor with a unique teaching style who relates exceptionally well to her students no matter what their skill level or background may be. The Kelly Richey Band at Thunder Bay Blues Festival

The Kelly Richey Band at Thunder Bay Blues Festival

We had a blast this past weekend at the Thunder Bay Blues Festival!  The Thunder Bay Blues Festival staff were super nice– we’d like to give a shout out to say THANK YOU– we really enjoyed ourselves!  The weather was perfect and the crowd was amazing… the festival was located on the Northern shore of Lake Superior — wow — what a view!

Everything was great until the drive home… the water pump went out in the van and we were stranded just outside Duluth, MN.  A wonderful family (Linda and Mike Rosin) who lived across from where we broke down were kind enough to give Rikk and Tobe a ride to the Duluth airport to rent a car so they could get home to their families– and Sonya and I stayed behind while the van was serviced.  Thank you Mike and Linda! Your kindness and helpfulness were very much appreciated, and we will be sure to “pay it forward”!

The van broke down on Sunday — it’s Tuesday and we’re still stranded, however, the van is scheduled to be finished by this evening and we should (fingers crossed) be on our way back to Cincinnati by tonight.

Thank you to all who came out to see us play in Canada.  We look forward to coming back–  see you down the road!

The Kelly Richey Band Photos with Heart and Boston

This has been a very BUSY past few weeks!!!  The Kelly Richey Band kicked things off by playing “The Bash” in Middletown, OH on Wednesday of last week.  On Friday, I entered a week long retreat with WWf(a)C and slipped out for a 24 hour period to join the band to open for Heart in PA and once the retreat ended yesterday, Thurdays at noon, I headed straight to Kettering, OH to the Fraze Pavilion to open for Boston last night.  Today we get back in the van and head to Thunder Bay, Ontario for one of Canada’s largest blues festivals where we play tomorrow night!

Here are some photo highlights from the Heart and Boston Concerts– I will write and reflect on our journey’s when I return!

The Kelly Richey Band LIVE – WE WILL ROCK YOU!

This past weekend the Kelly Richey Band hit the road for two festivals– unfortunately, the festival in Indiana was rained out, but the festival in Alpena, Michigan was alive and well. The weather was a little cooler than we expected, but once we started playing we warmed up quickly! The crowd was great, and we really appreciate all those who came out to see us! Check out the photos for KRB in action: Rikk Manning on bass guitar, and Tobe Donohue on drums (and DJ scratching) are two of the best matches for my guitar work to hit the stage yet! I’m thrilled to be playing with these two masterful musicians– we have a great time off stage as well as on, and I couldn’t be happier! Check out the photos below: (Photos by Sonya Ziegler)

Kelly Richey News & Updates

Kelly Richey News & Updates

This past week I delivered three school programs as an “Artist On Tour” for the Cincinnati Arts Association.  This was the first time I’ve had the opportunity to work with kids in 1st – 6th grade, and they were so much fun!  I gave a short history of the blues and helped the students see how the music we listen to today is heavily influenced by the blues.  I also pointed out that we all have a story to tell— and music and art are very powerful ways to express ourselves.  After performing several songs and giving a short teaching, I spent the last half of each of the programs letting the students come up and rap to beats I created on my drum machine— the students were great!  First and second graders took the mic just as fast as the older kids!  I was amazed by their openness to be on stage.  Music and art are so important to the development of our young people.  It’s an honor to deliver these programs and to be an Artist On Tour for the CAA!

Kelly Richey Solo

In addition to the school programs this week, I played three solo shows– the first show was to a packed house in my home town of Lexington, KY for a monthly event held at the Tadoo Lounge!  Lexington has grown so much since I moved to Cincinnati in 1997…!  They have worked hard to build awareness for music and art in the community and it shows — I was honored to play in support of the event for the CD release celebration of Chris Sullivan’s “Western Movies” official CD Release Party!  My solo shows continued as I returned to a slammin’ crowd in Maysville, KY where the dance floor was packed as I rolled out new beats and grooves for my show.  Art of Entertaining was an early show on Valentine’s Day, and it turned into a real party with one the areas best food and wine tasting venues! I’m having an absolute blast playing new original material and bringing back originals that I have continued requests for (and do not have in my current show with the band)!

Kelly Richey Returns To The Studio

This week I head back to Lexington, KY to record my next round of songs at Shangri-La Productions with Duane Lundy.  I’m so excited— I’ve been writing like crazy lately!  I’m having so much fun creating soundscapes, beats and grooves– and they’ve opened up many new doors for inspiration.  When I wrote Sweet Spirit I used drum loops, but they were loops from a program that were not tailored for each song.  Now with the new tools and gear that I have, I’m finding that I’m reaching new levels in my writing and my guitar playing. I’m taking some of my lyrics from poems in my poetry book “Whisperings”…  I’m having fun playing, writing, and creating songs that have been waiting to come out for many years.  I’ve worked up several of the new songs with the band, and the latest songs will be performed at my upcoming solo shows!  I’ll be recording songs “Fadin’” (from my poem “No Way Out”), So Afraid To Die (from my poem “Once Again”) and “Just Like A River” (from my poem “Love Is Like A River”).
