Shakedown Soul CD Review

One good thing about Kelly Richey, certainly not the only good thing, is that she rarely stays in the same place musically for very long. For her 16th and latest release, Shakedown Soul (Sweet Lucy Records), the singer/guitarist retains her usual exemplary guitar, songwriting, and vocal talents, but her usual mix of blues and rock n’ roll is enhanced with the addition of horns, DJ scratching and drum loops, and strings and synthesizers.

Shakedown Soul - Cover squareWhile Richey adds the extra bells and whistles to this new album, she doesn’t lean on it, like so many artists did years ago. Instead, it amplifies and broadens her sound to powerful effect on several tracks, like the feisty “You Wanna Rock,” “Only Going Up,” and “I Want To Run,” or the funky workouts “Lies” and “Love.” Richey’s songwriting skills are front and center on a trio of strong tunes, “The Artist In Me,” “Afraid To Die,” and “Just Like A River.”

Reportedly, Richey told producer Tobe “Tobiotus” Donohoe and bass player Rikk Manning, “You make me cool and you make me relevant and I’ll make you rock!” Donohoe, who played drums, synths, and did all of the sequencing, and Manning, who plays some monster bass on the album, more than hold up their end of the deal. As for Richey, the lady can’t help but rock …… she’s been doing it for 35 years now and is as cool and relevant as she’s ever been.

Shakedown Soul ranks as Kelly Richey’s best work to date. If you’re not familiar with her talents, this is a fine place to get started.

TRANSCENDING BLUES AND TANGO

In 1994, guitar-slinging singer/songwriter Kelly Richey dropped her Sister’s Gotta Problem debut and followed it up in ’95 with The Blues Don’t Lie. In the 20 years since, she’s put out 13 more blues-belting barn-stormers that accentuate her husky alto voice, filled with the kind of swagger usually reserved for men (or Bonnie Raitt). In 2014, Live At The Blue Wisp was but a mere blip on the way to this: Shakedown Soul (Sweet Lucy Records), an album so convincingly original and stunningly transcendent that it takes her bread’n’butter blues to extremes.

How so, you may ask.

This ain’t your daddy’s blues album. Her experimental side—aided and abetted by producer/drummer Tobe Donahue—has resulted in something so wide-reaching, it can only be described in terms of what other artists in other genres have done with progressive producers. Think how Daniel Lanois elevated the game of Emmylou Harris on her brilliant Wrecking Ball. It wasn’t exactly country but used country as a base. Richey uses blues as her base but considering the drum loops, hip-hop scratch, horns, keyboards, strings and synthesized sequencing, all in service to her growly late night bar-room voice, the blues comes out another animal.

Think Chrissie Hynde, Sheryl Crow, Janis (of course), Big Mama Thornton, Susan Tedeschi (before she met Derek Trucks) or even Bettye Lavette. Rock’n’roll, electronica, blues, folk and gospel all get their due. Emmlou isn’t the only country analogy here. The wildly experimental side also could be akin to the kind of career Jack White has put together or what Ryan Adams originally did in Whiskeytown. There’s no end to the possibilities here.

She’s logged over 800,000 miles to play over 3,700 shows. Her touring band is just drummer Donohue and bassist Rikk Manning, two bulls in a china shop. Their wall of sound is one thing but add the kind of studio outrageousness they prefer and you have one wild soiree of the highest order. Her last studio album, 2013’s Sweet Spirit, in no way prepares one for this onslaught.

I’m partial to the closing track. “Fading” is the only piece of acoustic loveliness on the CD, her deeply bent voice pleading and beseeching within a miasma of mysterioso and atmospheric clouds of sound.

You want nothin’ but the blues? Go somewhere else. This thing reaches.

This past weekend The Kelly Richey Band played Callahan’s Music Hall, which is one of our all time favorite music venues in the midwest.  We had an amazing crowd, and we hit the stage on fire to perform material from our new CD, “Shakedown Soul”.  We shot some video during the performance and added a few clips to YouTube so you can experience what you missed or, perhaps, what you were part of that evening!

Reflections In Blue – Bill Wilson CD Review

Kelly Richey
Shakedown Soul
Sweet Lucy Records KRB 1143

Shakedown Soul - Cover squareThis one is for the diehard blues/rocker…straight-ahead, no apologies, in your face hard core rock with blues undertones throughout.  This band knows the blues from the roots up but has a love for the hardcore rock aspect.  Richey has been around the block a time or two and plays it like she feels it.  This is Richey’s 16th album in the course of her 35 years as a singer/songwriter and guitar slinger, known for her fiery style and devil may care attitude.  Where Kelly is concerned, it is straight-ahead, what you see is what you get.  Her songs are based on life experience that has had its share of ups and downs, with nothing in between…or so it seems.  This is a woman who lives hard and plays hard.  She is backed by a band that shares her view every step of the way.  With Rikk Manning on bass, Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue on drums & percussion and Lee Carroll on keys they have all their bases covered.  They get an assist on various cuts from Robby Cosenza on drums and percussion and Blake Cox on bass, as needed.  More than Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy, I hear influences from Jimi Hendrix and perhaps even a bit of Black Sabbath and the like here and there.  Whether it’s the style I prefer or not, no one can argue with Kelly’s talents where guitar is concerned…and her vocals have the sound of one who has seen a life spent in barrooms and pool halls.  Call it hardcore if you like, this has the sound of life lived on the dark side of town.  There’s no pretty “Pollyanna” stuff here…just life on life’s term, and we all know that it is not always pretty.  Think what you will, Kelly Richey is here to stay. — Bill Wilson

RIKK MANNING BIO:

From Dayton, Ohio, Rikk is a rock solid, high energy bassist demonstrating blistering technical skill, solid groove, pure energy, and a few unique tricks up his sleeve. He displays a wide range of ability working in genres from progressive rock/jazz fusion (performing with the Michael Harris Tranz-Fusion to hard funk (as a writing and performing member of Funtime Freddy — all the way to classic R&B and jazz standards (performing with vocal/bass duo The Mannings. That just names a few of the musicians that Rikk has worked with during his extensive career.

Rikk is not only an accomplished performer, he is a composer and producer in his own right. Rikk’s debut solo single “Right out of the Gate” featuring performances from powerhouses Chris Carver on keys, John Arthur Gentry Jr. on guitar, Jason Palmer on drums, and special guest Philip Lassiter on trumpet was released in March 2015. The single is true to the style of Rikk’s influences, such as: Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, James Jamerson, Geddy Lee, Adam Nitti, Jaco Pastorius, Jermaine Morgan, Marcus Miller, Rocco Prestia, Roger Waters, and Victor Wooten.

Rikk recently joined forces with the Kelly Richey Band and has this to say: ”The opportunity to collaborate and perform with Kelly Richey could not have come at a more perfect time in my career. Raw power and technical prowess rooted in blues is exactly where I want to stretch my musical legs right now. Being able to get out on the festival circuit this summer to share this passion with Kelly and her dedicated fan base is a true pleasure!”

Rikk is a family man with a wife and two young daughters. He and his wife are very involved and connected to the community in their small town outside of Dayton, Ohio. His family sponsors several events throughout the year for the Carrie Vanderbeek Memorial, which is a yearly scholarship awarded through Muse Machine of Dayton, Ohio to help one graduate of Valley View High School interested in the study of the arts pay for college tuition.

Rikk played bass on the new Kelly Richey album, “Shakedown Soul”, lending his ultra talented musicianship to the record for a fresh new sound that delightfully holds the bottom end down in ways that take the craft of bass playing to amazing new heights.

Tobe played in the alt rock group, “LAZY ROCKET” for 10 years as a drummer, DJ and programmer (sequencer sampling, etc.), and he’s played with Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Buckethead, Color Me Badd, DJ Hit-Tek, Creeper Lagoon, Glue, Headtronicks, MC Paul Barman. YOU WANNA ROCK

You wanna rock – I wanna roll…
You say you wanna rock – I wanna roll…
Before you rock me all night long –
You better have some soul.

You wanna love – all night long…
You say you wanna love – all night long…
Before you give your love to me –
Make sure your love’s strong.

You wanna fly – fly so high…
You say you wanna fly – fly so high…
Before you take me for a ride –
You gotta make me feel inside.

Cincy Winter Blues Fest 2016

Cincy Winter Blues Fest 2016

The Kelly Richey Band hit the stage right after the amazing Carolyn Wonderland at the Cincy Winter Blues Fest last night.  This annual, well-attended event was held in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, at the stately Phoenix.  The beautiful, historic building was packed full of blues fans and blues musicians.  The weather was perfect (well, for a Cincinnati winter night, that is!) and the timing couldn’t have been better all the way around for KRB, as we got to play our new show in our very own hometown AND release our new album “Shakedown Soul” to our fans in person!

Rikk Manning (bass) and Tobe Donohue (drums, DJ scratching) were absolutely on fire, and each song felt like I was driving a well-designed freight train with just the the tips of my fingers!  We had a blast, so if this is any sign of what lies ahead for us this year, I can’t wait to see how far we take this musical experience!  We can’t wait to tour and bring our music to YOU and our fans all over the country!

Here’s some photos taken by my long-time band photographer Sonya Ziegler— from front and center row:

Our NEW CD will be available at the show!
Shakedown Soul:

“Shakedown Soul” is Kelly Richey’s 16th album in her 35 year career as a Master guitar slinger.  The album is an unprecedented mix of urban/indie in-your-face, raucous rock n roll, blues, funky bass grooves, and synthesized electronica— complete with DJ scratching and drum loops; with added elements like horns, strings, and synth sequencing that combine to make “Shakedown Soul” a one-of-kind, phenomenal sonic wall of sound that will have you foot stomping and head banging one minute and completely mesmerized the next.  Richey’s husky alto vocals and raw, ultra personal songwriting will leave you introspective, speechless and wanting more. Her guitar work on this album is truly exceptional— the songs retain her signature Strat sound, but Richey steps out of the box to incorporate new melodies and synthesized guitar sounds that sit perfectly within the concept of the album.  Never one to rest on her laurels, Richey has crafted her finest album to date, featuring ten stellar songs that are guaranteed to blow you away whether you are an old fan or new.  Be prepared for an astonishing, intense sonic experience that will leave you with your jaw on the ground!

Fading – by Kelly Richey

Fading – by Kelly Richey

Fading is the opening and closing track on the my new CD “Shakedown Soul”.  This song was originally written on acoustic guitar when I was 19 years old, and the lyrics talk about love, the walls we build to protect ourselves from love, and how we quickly lose ourselves when we choose to hide our feelings from those people that we love and yet are afraid to let in.  The CD opens with a high energy version recorded with the band,  and closes with an acoustic version.  Shakedown Soul starts with the power of sound and ends with the power of vulnerability; hence, it’s title.

I will be releasing the first of three music videos this week and the first song will be “Fading” (acoustic), so stay tuned.

Fading – by Kelly Richey

There’s a way in – aint no way out
To this thing that we keep talking’ about
I heard you calling’ – and I watched you fallen’
But I never could get through to you

On down the road where – everything lies there
Dream your dreams and watch them fly away
I’m sure there’s sometime – but maybe no time
To find a reason left to live at all

Well you’re fading – fading away
You’re just another face in this crowd
with nothing to say……
kelly richey- photo by sonya ziegler - fading
Through your eyes you – see what you want to
Then laugh at me because I’m just a joke
You’re so lonely – loving’ means only
What you do when there’s not time to cry

You came to me when – you were free then
I turned around – to watch – you fly away
I see you running – the sun keeps coming
Down on you – but not to light your way

Well you’re fading – fading away
You’re just another face in this crowd
with nothing to say……

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul

I wrapped up the Christmas weekend on Sunday with day one of my latest music video shoot, and all went very smoothly!  We got footage for two new music videos for two songs from my new album Shakedown Soul:  the first song we shot was the acoustic track (the album’s last song), a reprise of the opening tune, which is an all out electrified rocker titled “Fading”.  I wrote this song when I was 19 years old and it has remained one of my favorites throughout the years.  The song is about the struggles we face in finding our own voice, our own path in life, and our own way to love. (Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul – Photos by Sonya Ziegler)

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul - Photos by Sonya Ziegler

Kelly Richey Solo Video Shoot for Shakedown Soul - Photos by Sonya Ziegler The second song we cut was “I Wanna Run” and this video was cut for my electric solo show.  I wrote this song while in Nashville at the songwriting workshop with Mary Gauthier.  This was the final song written for the new CD and it’s an uptempo blues-rock anthem that I can take to the stage solo or with the band.  As a guitarist and performer, this song is just plain fun to play and sing– it rocks so hard it’ll shake the paint off the walls!

I was in good hands with Chris Vogel behind the lens and Sonya Ziegler was running about capturing photos of the production.  I saw an occasional grin on his face so hopefully he got the footage he was looking for.  Today we’re scheduled to shoot one video with the whole band and plan to knock out or rather rock out “You Wanna Rock”!  This song is a power blues song with a drop D tuning, so Rikk Manning’s low end will lift the church up off the ground with only Tobe “TOBOTIUS” Donohue, there to hold it down on drums!  I can’t wait!  I’ll post more photos as soon as I can!

Thank you for staying tuned in and keeping us turned on!  2015 has been a great year and I have a feeling that 2016 will be even better!

If You Wanna Rock – We’re Gonna Roll!
Kelly Richey’s “SHAKEDOWN SOUL”

“Shakedown Soul” has been a journey filled with profound personal growth, just as all of my prior sixteen CD’s have been. Let me tell you the story:

I went to Duane Lundy at Shangri-La Productions in December 2014 with 5 songs that I’d written to drum loops. I wanted to cut them live with drummer Robby Cozensa, Robby is a brilliant drummer and we approached the sessions like the White Stripes and The Black Keys— raw, real and organic. We added bass and keys, mixed, and did a basic mastering process. I also recorded two music videos, “Love” and “Afraid To Die” for release in February and March of 2015 and started booking and playing shows.

During my continued writing for “Shakedown Soul”, I had begun putting together a solo show and hired Tobe “Tobotius” Donohue to help me design my “spaceship” with loops, beats and new exciting elements that were cool and fun to work with. I was having a blast! While working with Tobe one day I asked him to play a set of drums set up in his studio— Woah!!! I was taken aback! He sounded like John Bonham and the loops he gave me that day sounded like a blend of blues, rock, funk and hip-hop— just what I’d dreamed of playing to in a solo setting.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerCurious, I asked Tobe if he would consider playing festivals only with me, (if I could find a bass player that made him want to play!) He said he would consider it, but stressed that he too wanted to do something that was fun, creative and inspiring. I went on a search and after several weeks of looking I found Rikk Manning. Tobe, Rikk and myself met up in my studio with the new songs and songs from my most recent live CD, started playing and, WOW magic began to happen! During the course of 2015, I played over 25 festivals and concerts with my new rhythm section and I’ve honestly never known such musical or professional happiness! I had long-time Kelly Richey Band fans saying, “This is the best I’ve every heard you sound”, and, “I’ve never seen you having so much fun AND where on earth did you find these awesome guys!!!???”

All the while, I kept song writing and I wrote some of the strongest material I’ve written to date….songs that access the deepest parts of my soul. The writing process was interwoven with my training to become a facilitator for Women Writing for (a) Change (WWF(a)C) where I had three week long workshop intensives this summer to write and develop. That has been a very rewarding experience and one that I will treasure forever.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerIn early October of this year I attended a writing workshop with Mary Gauthier, one of my absolute favorite songwriters of all time, and there I wrote the last song for the new CD. I called it, “I Want To Run”— a deeply personal and prophetic song that captured many of the struggles I faced and have continued to face as an artist and a human being. I give song writing credit to Mary as her advice throughout the workshop helped me to see the song that needed to be written. She helped me find the truth I was afraid to write about and ultimately afraid to face. Songwriting credits on “Shakedown Soul” are also given to Sonya Ziegler because she has been my musical sounding board for over five years now— she was very much involved in the development of my solo show, my acoustic CD “Finding My Way Back Home”, my poetry book “Whisperings – A Collection Of Poems By Blues Guitarist Kelly Richey”, my last studio CD release “Sweet Spirit”, and now “Shakedown Soul”.

The angst, joy, new growth in learning to accept myself, facing some hard truths and fears, and personal development process I’ve been through this past year has been just that, a “shakedown” of my very soul.

This past October I celebrated being sober now for 6 years but it’s just recently that I’ve started into a 12-step recovery process because I find that as a person with an addictive personality, being an “a-holic” continues in the form of negative patterns and ways of behaving until really being dealt with. For me, I’m a workaholic and the struggle with self worth is non-ending. There is no amount of success that can heal such wounds, so I’m happy to share that this year has presented many things to be thankful for— sobriety for 6 years, an amazing collection of friends that support and love me, Sonya Ziegler whom has stood by my side through the difficulties that a busy career and personal struggles presented, my mom and dad for loving me unconditionally, and you— each and every one of you who’s taking the time to read these words.

KRB Rehearsal_Photo by Sonya ZieglerAfter touring with my band this summer and sharing so much magic on stage, I knew that I wanted Tobe to produce the CD— and I asked for he and Rikk to play on the tracks. During the recording process we didn’t even see each other, as we all have our own personal recording studios, we all trusted each other musically. I asked Tobe to bring in elements of his production skills like “scratching”, DJ work, and his hip-hop and funk background from years of production work with Bootsy Collins, and I said “Dude, make me cool!” And he did… coupled with Rikk Manning’s stunning bass work throughout these tracks; laying down the best and deepest bass grooves I’ve EVER heard in my life! WOW— I’m thrilled! Sonya Ziegler did the amazing artwork and photography for the CD, and designer Gary Kelley put it all together. Their team work to bring Sonya’s artistic master to print is the icing on the cake. Me, I just play guitar and sing! LOL!

I’m proud to introduce to you “Shakedown Soul”— and I’m releasing this to my fan base first, before taking the CD to national press and radio. With your order, you’ll get an immediate FREE download of ”Shakedown Soul” to listen to while you wait for the hardcopy of the CD’s arrival on your doorstep.

I Thank you in advance for giving me a place to land in this crazy and wonderful musical landscape. I can’t wait for you to hear “Shakedown Soul”!

“SHAKEDOWN SOUL” is a 10-track album that deftly mixes blues, funk, electronica, and Richey’s signature gritty rock and roll. The ten tracks are woven together seamlessly with chunky guitar riffs, groove based, melodic bass lines, synthesized sounds, and in-your-face John Bonham-style drum grooves and loops. Richey augments foot-stomping rockers with blistering guitar work and husky vocals that swagger along a massive wall of sound that swirls and spins in layers with celestial glitches, DJ scratching, drum loops, horns, keys, strings, and synth sequencing into a hot mess of sonic candy that perfectly suits her raw, ultra-personal all-original song lyrics. “Shakedown Soul” features melodic, well-arranged songs that feel both ethereal and hard as concrete. Richey’s riff-heavy guitar is gritty and dirty, and she steps out of the box on this album to incorporate synthesized sounds with her signature Strat that masterfully complete each other.

Always finding new ways to shake up the blues/rock genre, her ballsy rock and roll guitar playing doesn’t disappoint. Insipid, she is not; instinctively peeling back the layers, Richey’s “Shakedown Soul” is a undeceptive sojourn that never makes excuses. Sonically lush, emotively raw and honest, “Shakedown Soul” is Richey’s finest work to date.

Check out this new video footage of The Kelly Richey Band – Sister’s Gotta Problem – from the White Mountain Boogie N’ Blues Festival on August 14th, 2016.  I’d like to give a BIG shout out to John Berkey on the drums as he so mightily filled in for Tobe Donohue while his daughter was being born!  Rikk Manning KILLS it on his bass guitar solo — watch out!

Enjoy!

Short Bio: Kelly Richey is one of the hardest working independent musicians out there; to date logging an extraordinary 1,000,000 miles touring, and at one point in her 30-year professional career, gigging a grueling 275 days out of the year. Richey has toured in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Born in Lexington, Kentucky but now based in Cincinnati, Richey started playing guitar at the age of 15. Today, a staggering 4,000 gigs later, she more than earns the title of master guitarist and singer/songwriter. She has been described as “Stevie Ray Vaughan trapped in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out”. She has been listed as among the top 100 gifted guitarists by the Truefire Community in 2011, and frequently draws comparisons to blues guitar icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack and Albert King, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Lita Ford, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, Little Feat, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Average White Band, Robben Ford, Warren Zevon, and James Brown.  Richey has fronted her blues/rock power trio, The Kelly Richey Band since the early 1990’s, and she also performs an intense, dazzling solo show incorporating electric and acoustic guitar, looping, beats, electronic sound synthesis, and some of her more personal acoustic material.
